Should give the team ..and the fans..a bit more belief for the run in..
I’ve even begun to dream of the carlsberg end to the season 😱😱
We stay up..forest relegation..l##ds get beat at Wembley int playoffs final..
It could happen………

It’s actually worse than that. Finishing third just puts you into the playoffs. Then you have to play the team finishing sixth, home and away. Winners go to Wembley to play the winners of the other match between fourth and fifth. Quite often the third best team throughout the season doesn’t get promoted. Hangover from not getting automatic promotion and teams below in better current form. You could have 20+ points more than the other teams in the playoffs but it means nothing, apart from home advantage in the second leg. Best way to get promotion but absolutely devastating if you don’t. I might be wrong, but didn't Town finish 3rd the first season they introduced the play-offs, thereby missing out on auto promotion...or am I just dreaming that ? Yes you are imagining it. It was introduced in 86/87 with the third from bottom going into the playoffs with 3rd,4th and 5th of the division below. We did win our last three games that season. When we'd been odds on for relegation. Condemning Sunderland to the play offs. Which they lost.

Last time we got relegated out of this division i was literally on the floor the way it happened. (A last minute handball goal scored at an another ground coupled with our defeat to Birmingham Dave)Leaving the ground thinking we’d have to watch poor teams come visit for the next 12 months. What we didn’t realise at the time and probably explains over the top reactions every time we currently lose a game is it wasn’t 12 months, it was actually 12 years of absolute shite viewing. The weird thing about that game, which I went to, was that I didn't even think we could be relegated so even when we lost I wasn't that bothered...it was only when folk around me were getting agitated at Birmingham players taking the p*ss and standing up hurling abuse back at them that I started to wonder...then someone told me what had happened.. I walked out of the ground still believing we'd stayed up though..and it wasn't 'til I got home that I learned the unbelievable truth that we'd been relegated and remember thinking how an earth had that happened, how had I not worked it out before going to the game... It was totally surreal.

Everything had to conspire against us in the final throws of that season, and everything did. So many pieces of a 'Town get relegated' jigsaw falling into place over the last 2 or 3 games.
Seem to remember Barnsley playing a team of kids and fringe players on the last day at Pompey..allowing Pompey to get the win they needed to have a chance of staying up. Barnsley boss Nigel Spackman being an ex-Chelsea team mate of Pompey boss Graham Rix.
Was a truly grim day and only a year after we blew a chance of getting in the play offs.

I'd say thats an understatement. We blew a chance of automatic promotion, not even getting into the play offs was a monumental fuck up. We were 11 points clear of 7th on 1st Jan 2000, with a miles better GD. We were 15 points clear of Bolton and Birmingham who both got in. We were in a 5 horse race for the title and came 8th!

I can still see Ian Bennet clawing that Boothy header out of the top corner late on. Of the relegation seasons I have seen this was by far the worst experience. That last day was horrendous and I know you should speak ill of the dead but Trevor Francis was..... well let's just say he went down in my estimation that day; "do you feel sorry for Huddersfield"? "No!".
What that memory just shows is how things can conspire against you. Although Saturday was massively welcome and necessary it has gone. The one hope that shot of adrenaline may still be coursing through the team as they prepare for tomorrow. I desperately want us to stay up but know what can happen. In reality it might come down to a little bit of luck these next few weeks. Let's hope the footballing gods are on our side.....again.

Amazing how football changes over a couple of decades.
Looking at the championship that season...Gillingham, Grimsby, Stockport, Tranmere, Crewe, Wimbledon ...and Bradford were in the Prem!

I’m not advocating change, i think it’s a stupid suggestion. BUT what if say 6 or even 8 teams did get relegated from Championship and League One.
Relegation wouldn’t be the disaster it is now. We’d see more grounds.
Bradford City might even get promoted.

Dougie Freedman's hand ball for one. Stockport battered Palace. Their fans were desperate to send Palace down. I was at work in North Kent. They had it on the TV, through a dodgy On digital box in one of the plant control rooms. I got so much grief for the last two hours of my shift. Edited - Hopkins blatant handball.

I'd never thought of the teams in the USA 'deliberately' losing games towards the end of the season, just to get a better position in the player drafts. That just seems so bonkers and weird, but quite sensible at the same time! It is horrible to get relegated, but I'd rather have promotion and relegation than a fairly static franchise system. PS: I'd really, really like to be able to relegate Birmingham City on our last home game of the season. I've been watching Town since the early 70's, but the day we were relegated on the last day of the season (6th May 2001) by losing to Birmingham is the worst feeling ever at a football match. It was the way they rubbed it in that hurt Hopefully it will be our turn to sing "we'll meet again"

I’d rather see Old Trafford every season than a ‘new ground’ Harrogate. Bradford wouldn’t get promoted.

Warning, some of this is tongue in cheek but mostly not- As we come to the end of my first full season as a supporter, having watched every second of every match, I’ve come to the conclusion that I get why most supporters don’t have their cheese entirely on their cracker- how COULD you? Relegation is such an awesomely insanely horrific penalty. To think you’d have to deal with all the fallout and then finish top 3 just to get back to where you are today? I hate it yet also wish we had it over here. My Sacramento Kings would’ve been a G-League team for most of my life. My Giants would’ve had some Triple-A moments, and my Niners…..well actually they’re usually fairly good. The problem we have over here, especially in the NBA and NFL, is “tanking”. Teams that are out of playoff contention sometimes will “tank” games to ensure a better draft pick and rest star players. Relegation threats would end that right quick, but unfortunately our greedy owners would never agree to it. I guess I’m writing more than anything to say how great it was to see that goal yesterday at JSS, I’ve watched the Cowshed footage a hundred times, and I woke my wife and kids up running around my backyard at 7am screaming goaalllllllllllll like a crazy person. I KNOW that the work is far from over, and today brings a whole new set of challenges (on a short week), but just for that moment and time, when there have been so many heartbreaks and failures this year, I found myself so happy for all of you just gettting a few minutes/hours of joy. I don’t know what the future holds but I love you guys and can’t wait to ride the rollercoaster with you. That's all well and good but my Twitter feed is full of incomprehensible tweets about something called Kings. Just go into settings and mute the word “Kings”

They also had a play off where a team 4th from bottom (guessing) in first division played off against the winner of 2nd division play off, think Chelsea played in it. The Leeds Charlton one was the same, Charlton were top flight and stayed up. You’re right! Did it also go to pens with Charlton winning 7-6 over leeds or did I dream that one?

🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔 And Bobby Madeley is the ref for them midweek 😈 This is what I don’t get about some football supporters. They’ve got some sort of complex where they think they’re immune to relegation. Most supporters at all the clubs in the thick of it now, must be fearing the worst? I’m hopeful, but not over confident of survival. We need a lot to go for us over these last few matches, arguably we have 4 games to salvage our championship future because you can probably write off the Ipswich game.

I'd echo this. Yes, the overall standard was poor but in many ways, I have fonder memories of that 2001-2012 period than I have of 2018-2024. 43 unbeaten Lincoln, Bournemouth & MK play-off semis Two jnjury time goals to beat 10 man Walsall in the craziest match I can recall Finishing 04/05 with 9 straight wins Rhodes super 5 at Wycombe Cardiff The Brighton 7-1 I could carry on What about the 2013/17 period? 🤔 That Chris Powell season and a half finished me as a Town fan . Robins did a cracking job with us in my eyes looking back at the squad he had and football he played … and the fact we sold our best players every summer .

I believe we can win 3 out of the next 4. I also believe we can get something against an Ipswich team in the play offs.. Unfirtunately me believing this is no good if the manager and team dont believe it. Preston is always a grind, no different this season. Bristols season is done. Swansea are eminently beatable as are Birmingham. Teams with 3 or 4 points more than us will believe they can draw a couple or more of the remaining games, thats dangerous. What it is,its in our own hands. We win tomorrow and it still is.

That was a low point with Powell however I was still enjoying seeing town in the championship, better players, bigger clubs and better football. Coming up from L2 and L1 was enjoyable but off the back of the club going into admin and starting from scratch with 8 players. Sliding into L1 following consecutive, self inflicted monumental balls ups will leave me much less enthused to put it mildly. I've no interest watching town in L1 this time around.
