With all due respect, this sounds identical to what people were saying when we were relegated from the Premier League. To be fair at the time we thought we might be able to at least half compete financially. It wasn’t to be the case. Other than Birmingham the shouldn’t(not shouldn’t not won’t 😀) be the case. We should be getting automatic promotion. We are one of the biggest clubs in that division and anything less than Top 6 is not acceptable. However, I don't think we've brought in sufficient reinforcements to get promoted. Hopefully I'm wrong.

I still think it is too early to say, to be realistic (there's a difference between what people hope/demand and what is realistically achievable).
Peterborough will however be a good early barometer of where the team is. It's a tough challenge against a team with League One pedigree and aspirations to be in the top 6. One game won't define a season but it will be good indicator of where we are, what the strengths and weaknesses are (noting the window is still open) and what to expect.

I agree on top 6 minimum. The manager knowing the division is a huge plus,he knows what’s required. Would agree right now we are probably short of autos unless there is a significant up turn in some who were with us last season performance/quality wise. I’m hoping the rumoured striker on loan is actually the lad joe Taylor, think he could add something we don’t have up top….pace, also from his record last season and what iv seen of him he can finish. I don’t think it would be arrogant of us to expect top 6 and even pushing autos with the right additions.

Reinforcements needed I agree we need to reinforce, but even with what we have I expect top 6. If we bring in two strikers, we look stronger (and pressure is off Healey to be fit for 46 games). If we bring in an anchor man for midfield, the midfield will be as balanced as it has been in a long time. Evans and Kane have given us two options who are comfortable in possession, for the first time in a long time - last season's major achilles heel. A left-sided central defender will give us balance at the back. I'd also want someone who can sprinkle a little stardust and give us an option to break out of a strict 3-5-2. I like how we've set up so far in pre-season - we look like a team with a plan for a change - but being able to change things up would be massive. If we do all the above, we'll be among the favourites for automatic promotion. Even as it is, we've strengthened significantly in key areas. Still lots of chaff around the club, but those players won't be playing. The trick will be to get them out (and with thanks, in several cases - they've tried and not been good enough, which is nothing to do with their character) and get somebody else in who can contribute.

The squad as it stands isn’t good enough for a promotion push, it’s too big and it’s full of shite. We should be trying to shift Jackson, High, Austerfield, Simpson, Hudlin, Harratt, Ward, Radulovic, Jones, and probably a few more. Not an easy job because they either aren’t very good or they cant stay fit for more than 5 minutes. We need players who will be able to contribute more effectively. We’re crying out for some pace in the team, especially at centre half and we’re massively short of quality up front. Still a lot of work to do before I think we can be compete at the top end.

as a relegated team with a sensible owner and stable setup in the business, with the lads we have brought in plus, let's assume, the 3-4 more we need in to be competitive, we really should not be expecting less than Top 6 finish

As it stands I think we could scrape play offs but no further than that. Nedd a replacement for Balker, DM, 2 strikers and possibly another back up RWB.
If Helik, Spencer and Nicholls leave then throw in 3 more to the equation.
We are currently net 3 transfers in with Rudoni leaving and 4 being brought in. Not much to instigate a significant step change.

The season will be 3 weeks old before deadline day, who will be a Town player when we visit Rotherham the day after is a question that no one can answer with any certainty, we could be doing deals right up to the last minute of the window if bids we are receiving at present are not adequate or no where near valuation figure......Do we keep a unhappy player or do we drop the price? Also halts any new faces coming on board until any unrest situations are resolved, although everyone could 'happy as Harry' to stay?

We'll know after the Peterborough game and I'm glad we're playing one of the better teams first. Duff should be confident with the squad and personal experience he's got, we should be playing to win every game and I believe that attitude will be drilled into the team.

If Helik, Spencer and Nicholls leave then throw in 3 more to the equation. We are currently net 3 transfers in with Rudoni leaving and 4 being brought in. Not much to instigate a significant step change. Not really. We released over 20 and loans returned, then sold Rudoni. From last season's first team, we're down Nakayama, Matos, Rudoni, Burgzorg, Diarra, and Edwards. We're also down Mahoney, Rowe, Rhodes as squad options (allowing for them being out on loan). So that's 9 'first team' players gone, which is the start of a big turnover of players. Plenty of instigating a change there, especially if we're also looking to move on High, Austerfield, Hudlin and Simpson as a starting point for under-contract players. That's half a squad. Others released were kids who weren't going to make the breakthrough. We need five quality additions. We also need a couple of u-21s who may be able to come in and contribute once the core of the squad is sorted. A couple of kids on the books might be able to step up - Eccleston seems to have impressed, Stone has a decent reputation, and Conor Falls has been spoken about - plus Iorpenda, who we're pretty certain can and will. But even as is, there's enough in the squad to be challenging at the top end of the table. Oxford got up, for goodness' sake, and our core is much stronger than their promotion squad (although there's the additional caveat of their squad being very well coached with a clear identity, which is something the jury is out on for us).

I've said it before that Duff isn't here to pick up a wage. I definitely think he will look to creating a "winning" mindset and if people aren't fitting in he will look to make changes. The current trip will be telling. Not in terms of results but for MD to know what he has, and what he has to do. I don't think we will be allowed to "muddle through".

I listened to Duff's post-match comments after the 4-2 defeat and he didn't sound particularly impressed with the performance, certainly less so than whoever was asking the questions. It's quite refreshing to be honest, I think our recent history has shown quite clearly that managers talking up poor performances doesn't get them or us anywhere at all.

We definitely need new faces in ASAP. Assume Nicholls and Thomas will be on their way (and still questions over Spencer etc.).
We'll not do anything with Maxwell, the "triangle of doom", and relying on Ward and Koroma to stay fit/find form (AGAIN).

As it stands.
Nicholls (probably going)
Miller Lees Helik (probably going) Pearson Sorensen
Hogg
Evans Kane
Ward Healey
I can see why we're currently 12/1 with the bookies.

I've altered my vote from 13-20.
Since signing MM, LS, AE & HK, I now think we'll be 7-12.
Seriously lacking pace in the squad, although with Balker's injury I'm more concerned about the lack of pace at the back than up front. If I was looking at how to unpick us, low block and hit us on the break. The signings of Evans and Kane should help us to unpick a low block but that threat of a counter attack remains a concern.
Some more pace at the back would enable us to play a higher line, which would also help brak down opposition defences.
Spencer is going to be enormously important to us this season. Relying this heavily on a 20 year old is a concern for me.

From a lot of the highlights of the games in Austria, I still see the same issues from last season Defence way too slow and all over the place Passing not good enough No threat in the box Too many still look uninterested Yes its pre season, yes its a new regime but I cant see much difference, to me the biggest cause of relegation was the attitude of the players and the ineptitude of the likes of Cartwright. If anything has changed, then i'm sorry I don't see it, despite winning 2 games. Hopefully there will be more signings, pace at both ends of the pitch is desperately needed, but as things stand any talk of top 6 is totally unrealistic, as things stand we are battling relegation, even if Nichols, Helik and spencer stay, without them or better replacements I fear back to back relegation, remember 4 go down from this division

I think battling relegation is a wild statement, factoring in the level of the last 3 pre season opponents is something that we need to take into account.

Last season I think it was very obvious how to beat town, you just let us have the ball. We would huff and puff and create nothing and then get caught short at the back, usually after we had given it away with poor passing. I’m not sure if the quality of the passing from those previous players has improved much but the off the ball movement and positioning certainly has. I’m still worried about breaking teams down and how we plan to do that when teams sit in a low block. The goals in Austria were 2 x penalties, 2 headers from set pieces(albeit one was a recycled ball) and more encouragingly, 2 tap ins from excellent wing play and low crosses. We still need that striker who can get in behind and finish a 1v1 or that dynamic attacker who will cut inside and shoot. It’s a work in progress but I, like others are worried about the pace at the back and the gaps between CB and WB. I feel like we may need to be quite prolific to negate the defensive issues this season.

One key factor here is the talk. We're aiming to bounce back at the first attempt. We're one of the favourites to do so.
Optimistically, that says we're still not finished with our incomings. Pessimistically, we're probably still not finished with out outgoings, with Sorba, Nicholls, Spencer & Helik all still likely to attract bids before the deadline. Also pessimistically - even if we don't lose any key players at all, we're probably 4 signings away from being serious promotion contenders.
I wouldn't rule us out of making the playoffs. But then I also wouldn't rule out Bolton, or Peterborough, or Barnsley, or Lincoln, or Wycombe, or Rotherham, or Blackpool, or Charlton, or Burton Albion... (and I'm only ruling out Birmingham from the playoffs because I think they'll piss the league).
At the moment we're hopefuls - not serious contenders.

Hopefully the probably going pair are now probably staying (unless offer they/Town can't refuse), Helik played 90 minutes yesterday & LN did v Hertha so we have to presume they are on board & will play against Sheff Utd........Town @14-1 now compared to Brummies ridiculous 2/1, a tenner ew (1/5 for top 4) pays £168 for Town or £44 for Blues. Honestly, I've never given much weight to preseason results. Or more to the point - I've never given any weight to preseason results. On paper, Birmingham already had the strongest squad in the division before their signings. Leonard & May we already know are good. Willumson and Hansson look class as well.
