Grealish is obsessed with silly little passes when he has a great chance to shoot. I would have left him out too so fair play to Southgate having the balls to do it Tough call for him though as to which two players you start either side of Kane Foden Palmer Saka Eze I think he'll go Foden and Saka but it's madness to leave Palmer out after the season he has had. I also think Eze is a far better player than Saka but Southgate will be loyal to Saka He will fit 3 of them in. He will play Jude deeper with Rice. Palmer Foden and Saka behind Kane. Mainoo will start as a sub. My thoughts. I think this is what he should do, but I fear it might be too gung ho for Gareth. I expect to see Rice and Gallagher sitting with Foden, Bellingham and Saka behind Kane.

It would be stupid to play Saka over Palmer based on this season IMO.
Palmer contributed 22 goals and 11 assists in 34 PL games for a Chelsea team that were often shite (but he wasn't). Saka contributed 16 goals and 9 assists in 35 PL games playing for the team that finished second.
I'm a huge Saka fan but especially as he has been injured (or currently is injured?), Palmer would be nailed to start for me.

Southgate's often been criticised for not picking based on form, but he largely has this time. Agree with dm..saka is behind a few on current form and perhaps lucky to even be in the squad.
I think it's a bit harsh on Grealish. Think id have found a way to include him simply because he wins so many free kicks in dangerous positions. But I can see why GS has left him out..hes barely been playing.
We should have won the last Euros and think we have an excellent chance winning this one.

Southgate has his faves, we know Maguire would have played CB if fit, despite not playing at Man U. The same goes with Saka & to be fair, he has been really good for England so deserves to keep the shirt, especially being an Arsenal regular & having plenty of international experience but it should give him an incentive knowing Palmer & Eze are right behind him itching to play.

Wharton is the most exciting one for me in terms of how we could be that midfielder we've needed for years. Sees a pass instantly and executes it effortlessly and that's forward passes too, not needlessly going sideways or back.
He could be the English Busquets

I honestly don’t rate Saka much at all. Seems to go missing in the big games so I would trust him to be invisible against France, should we meet. I’d rather play Gordon.

He was always talented and did things that you thought wow, but was quite small as a kid and showed no signs of the levels he is now achieving. Unbelievable rise to where he is now over the past 12 months or so!!

Saka would definitely be in the squad. He's brilliant. But based on this season, Palmer's emergence has put him higher in the pecking order for this tournament (for me anyway).

Saka has been really good this season and has come under unfair scrutiny. Even in his leanest spell of the season in the last 10 league games, he still scored 3 and assisted 2. I would put Palmer in ahead of him for now. Grealish is brilliant, I understand why he's been left out though.
The general standard and depth England have is pretty astonishing really, considering it's probably quite fair to even question Saka's inclusion after the season he's had. In 2016 James Maddison would've been one of the first names on the team sheet, and he can't get in the squad at all.

I’d say yes he has picked some form players into the squad but you have a feeling the team will still be a team mainly of his faves with players starting that are either injured, out of form or not starting, including Stones. What worries me is we all know Maguire would have started and he’s giving Luke shaw as much chance as possible and if not then Trippier, who is also out of form and not 100% will play. Tonight’s lineup suggests we’re sticking with the 2 DMs which will no doubt be Bellingham & Rice, which will stifle Bellingham and once again make us too defensive. Branthwaite not going is a worse decision than Grealish. As good as we’ve been, Southgate is still the reason we haven’t won a tournament yet.

You can't tell me that there isn't a better left back option than a past it Kieran Trippier being played out of position. Tyrik Mitchell is better for one

Who schedules these matches? Seriously? He’s picked his 26 so just cosy up somewhere luxurious and work on things on the training pitch. It’s fucking pointless and actually counterproductive as no one will go deep in a meaningless friendly.

Southgate is a one tactically inept individual. Talk about giving Serbia and the rest a template to follow. The big nations will muller us this Summer; a second round or quarter final exit looms. The end is surely near for the manager.

Slow, laboured, directionless, dull to watch.
Definitely a Southgate team.

How painfully predictable is all this? Limp through the group stages and probably lose against the first top team we come up against, probably France. How he can take some naturally gifted expressive players and make them intro drones is impressive. Agreed that a lot of the players are overhyped. Bellingham and Saka definitely (who, by the way, is valued at 140mill!)

One of the main players for Arsenal who had ridiculous form second half of the season. He’s also one player that actually turns it on for England.
