Just for a bit of fun, where do you think we should go from here with the national team?
Personally I'd go for Howe although he's never won a big trophy, so I wouldn't be adverse to going for Klopp.

The England manager should be:
A. English B. A great coach and motivator with a good track record coaching elite players successfully in a top division.
Controversial I know.
Not sure we've had A and B since El Tel. Allardyce maybe, who had he not been a greedy idiot might have done well.
Eddie Howe probably has the best CV.

Anybody other than Southgate. Yes we got to the final but at best we were average (given the players at our exposal) but mostly shit to watch!!

Just think potter and howe would be more of the same. Preferably need someone who's done it in this country and can play expensive football, step forward herr klopp.

Klopp. Couldn't care less if they are English or not given how piss poor the selection of English coaches are.

Southgate.
No other English manager has the experience or skills that are any better.
He's a great figurehead, we can be proud of.
Employing a Johnny foreigner diminishes our team, and our support for that team.
Close the poll.

Bielsa or Ancellotti doubt we’d have any chance of either though.

Players picked on reputation, not form or fitness. Couldn't even pick a balanced squad.

Anyone who is brave enough to stop picking that overrated carthorse of a centre forward for starters.

I still think Venables should be the one we model the requirements on.
Which English born Mgr that is, is anyone’s guess.
I’m just not as taken with Howe as many on here are. I suspect he would be an improvement on Southgate, but would he be allowed to tell theFA to do one if they interfere?
There’s certainly hope for the future though. Taken a few years from when they were telling us the PL would improve our international success but hey ho…

I would be tempted to go for Carsley. He will know all the players very well and will know all their strengths and weaknesses. Not a high profile choice I know but how many of our previous high profile appointments actually achieved any sort of success. Venables was arguably unlucky but still nothing achieved of any substance. The foreign appointments were very ordinary to be honest, so I wouldn't really want to go down that road again

I want the best manager available I don't care if he's English. There are plenty who would love to work with our current crop of players, Southgate is a very poor in game manager. Every time we've played a top level team we lose, he's had remarkable luck with the fixtures he's had in major tournaments.
Issue is the FA want a yes man so it's very likely Lee Carsley will be the next one in. Likely a great coach but more is needed to win a major tournament.

What about our friend Steve Cooper. Known to the FA after managing the U16 & U17. Winning the World Cup with the U 17 in 2017. Suppose Eddie Howe has to be the favourite at the moment. PS I was joking about Steve Cooper 🥴

I think your general point is correct, but we knocked out the Germans and Dutch in the last 2 euros. Not the best teams they’ve put out but they are the big nations that we’d always failed against, so I think some of that fear factor is gone from the players.

Klopp would be idea if we want fast attacking football but don't think that will happen.
Eddie Howe seems to get the best out of players whereas Potter struggled at Chelsea obviously.
Lee Carsley would be an interesting one - be like promoting GS.

And he has coached some of these kids from U16s, in the same vein as the current Spanish coach.

Bielsa? We arent going to win anything conceding 4 goals every game.
I can never understand how a national coach doesnt have the same rules around nationality apply that the players do. Hes probably the key man in the 'team' but can be from anywhere.
To me international football is about the best of one country against the best of another and that should include everyone involved..manager, coaches , the lot, not just players.
I doubt Howe would accept the job at the moment anyway but he has almost no European football experience as either a manager or player, never mind international experience. And that is important IMO.
A wildcard might be Frank Lampard? Bit of a mixed bag as a club manager , some impressive times, some poor times, but has mountains of experience as an international player . Knows what playing for England is all about, knows tournament football and would have the respect of all those players in the squad from day 1. very intelligent bloke, the kind the FA have generally gone for over the years.

I guess IF there is a new manager the expectation for 2026 and so on will be to at least match Southgate's achievements but in a more eye catching manner?

The Germans were a poor side when we knocked them out, and we were gifted an extremely generous penalty to get us in the game against the Dutch. To be fair we did play well against the Netherlands, probably the only decent performance of the tournament. Southgate seems to have created a decent moral amongst this lot but you need more at this level in tournament football. He'd be a decent assistant manager but he's not a winner.

Needs to be a man manager - especially if not english. So klopp fits the bill, but i have no idea if this is in any way feasible.
It's got to be attractive to any confident manager.
Shame its not a year later for pep as it might be the sort of challenge his ego needs, finally bringing england a trophy again. Im not sure how well he would fit international management though. His day in day out intensity / meticulous football might not suit lack of time with players / tournament tactic football. Still, he's going to be better than Southgate.
I'd quite like potter but question his mentality. He seemed to struggle mentally at chelsea - admittedly most do.
Carrick could be the one..

Cooper is a decent manager but he doesnt have the personality for it. He couldnt take the PL spotlight and got upset about digs to his appearence iirc.

If England win the World Cup in 2026 will anyone really care if the coach ain’t English. All the players are !!
I’d throw the chequebook at Klopp. Master tactician. Master man manager. Master motivator. Universally feared and respected. Plays an exciting, all action attacking style of football. Would he go for it? well the squad sure would whet his appetite.
Spain have got Yamal & Williams- 2 of the hottest prospects in world footballer but we’ve got Bellingham 20, Palmer 22, Foden 24, Saka 23, Mainoo 19, Wharton 20, Arnold 25, Guehi 24, Konsa 27, stones 30, Gordon 22, Rice 25, Gallagher 24. Pickford 30, Branthwaite 21.
That is some squad.
This tournament and this squad showed that they need a progressive modern attacking manager with high level tactical awareness. The old keep it tight and nick one is not good enough. We’re better than that.
I would be looking for the best candidate. Erikson and Capellos ineptitude has no bearing on our choice now. Southgate has done a fine job of building the team spirit but he’s taken them tactically as far as he can. Time to hand over the reigns to someone more capable..
What about José? Or Poch?

Only one man for the job.
Neil Warnock.
On second thoughts, you just know Danny Ward would get picked ahead of Toney and Watkins.
