For anyone questioning whether they were offside: (Ward should have been given onside, Healey was correctly adjudged to be offside) I think that Ward one is too tight to tell from the replay angle. They're the really hard ones for linesmen when you have 2 players running in opposite directions. It's tight, and it took me watching it at 0.25x speed so that I could pause it at the right time - but he was in an onside position as the ball was played. I'm not going to condemn the linesman for missing it though. First viewing I thought it was offside as well, and replays at normal speed were difficult to tell.

I don't like the modern game at all compared to how it used to be, i would play with two wingers and center forwards every game. Nothing wrong with hoof ball up to two big forwards either, when you had 40,000 in Leeds road roaring on the wingers it was brilliant. Didn’t need season tickets to get in the old ground for top games either. Got ticketed out of the Premier League games after being a regular supporter since 1969. Honestly don’t think I will ever become a regular supporter again

I did the same, and still can't tell if Ward leaning forwards is past the defender or not given it isn't in line.

extended highlights from the Town V Exeter City game Can’t work out how to post an image but if you freeze it when the ball is played through to Ward he is definitely onside. Attachments:

How the linesman gave Ward offside is ridiculous. Has he not seen the left back (closest player to him) playing him on by about 2 yards. I was surprised it got given on the day being offside never entered my head.

Very poor decision from the Lino. Was a yard onside. Not even marginal when you watch it back

Looked miles onside at the time, now seeing the screenshot it's just an embarrassingly bad decision.

I thought he looked inside watching the highlights but that attachment as said above shows it was a shocking decision

Natural instinct to look at the lino, like you say, with Healeys. Wards wasn't even close.

Think we're being a bit generous re Wards offside goal. Looking at the mowing line on the pitch, the left back doesn't look to me like he's playing him onside. The only question is the closest defenders trailing leg, might just be playing him onside. Very very tight in my opinion though. Purely academic anyway.... EDIT: Youtube extended highlights 3:57. Think this shows defenders trailing leg playing him onside.....But still academic !!!

It's a close call and 1 look at full speed with the movement and leaning I can easily understand why it was given offside. The camera angle makes it likely be onside from the trailing leg, but still impossible to tell. I'm fairly confident that if you had a side on angle that Ward would be ahead of the left back, or at the very least level. Claiming he's 2 yards onside from that player is laughable.

Well I wouldn't because he wasn't and as stated earlier, offside never entered my thoughts when the ball went in. I had a clear view from the kilner and a linesman shouldn't be getting that wrong.

You don't even have evidence he got that wrong, it's guesswork from a poor angle. Those calls are one of the hardest to officiate when players are moving opposite ways. Have a watch of when Neville and Carragher had a go to see it.

It just looks like a spot the ball competition to me The ball has clearly left his foot, white blur, so I recommend Specsavers.

Or to quote the poster "2 yards onside"? I think, from a bad angle, that the trailing leg of the right back keeps him onside, but that's after slowing it down/stopping the video and it's still very close with Ward leaning forwards. I completely understand why the linesman gave it offside in real time. It's not an embarrassing decision or whatever else has been made out.

It is absolutely clear in that still moment after the ball has left the foot, in consideration of the geometry from Wards shoulder to floor, the defenders trailing foot, and the mowed grass line, that Ward is clearly on-side, but not by the extreme of 2 yards that you choose to quote.

I have watched it numerous times. As I have now stated twice, live, offside never even entered my mind as it was nowhere near. Normally, like with Healeys, instinct tells you to look at the linesman if there is a small chance it could be off. Wards, it is poor officiating.

Its the guy at the top of the image playing him onside by a yard, not the marker. Not according to the mowed grass line. Ward is a step into the lighter shade of cutting, their left back is a step into the darker shade of cutting. That equates to 2 yards.

I wasn't that side of the ground but the consensus at half time from those who were was that he was definitely onside. Unusual for it to be unanimous. Big mistake from the lino but fortunately didn't impact the result.

Not according to the mowed grass line. Ward is a step into the lighter shade of cutting, their left back is a step into the darker shade of cutting. That equates to 2 yards. I appreciate we agree it's not offside, but no way 2 yards. Ward is leaning forward & his shoulder on the still is roughly level with the head of the defender, while the defender in leaning the the other way and his foot is approximately keeping Ward onside by 2 feet, not 2 yards.

Mike Hellawell, "Benny" Hill, you always expected them to have a go at beating the full back and putting a cross in. Seems to be a bit of a lost art these days. Those two bring back some early memories together with Tony Leighton and Colin Dobson
