When he eventually settled at Bristol City, he was a fans' favourite there even during their appalling relegation season. The goals dropped off but he did pretty well on assists. This is overlooked by those having a go. Toward the end at Bristol he was playing much deeper and in more of a playmaker role so inevitably scoring fewer himself. When we signed him we were a bit short of that kind of player so when it was announced he was coming back i thought if we signed him more as a midfielder rather than a striker and if his legs were up to C'ship pace he might still do a job for us. However we did sign him as a striker and his legs had all but gone so it didn't work out. I still saw him have a few decent games for us even then, cup games v Charlton and Chesterfield stick out. But no one could have expected the same player back that we sold to Blackburn after 10 years away. Town will alwys be aspecial club to him. You could see how pleased he was when he came back to watch us at the Cardiff playoff even though he wasn't our player any more.

He's still age 31 and playing some decent football his best years to come for me at league one level . Yeah he came to the playoff v Cardiff because he's a Huddersfield fan n loves your team regardless. Be happy for him and likewise we wish him luck . Good lad is steady

He actually started really well for us last season with cameos from the bench but the problem was when we played him from the start he looked fooked. If he hadn't picked up that injury in pre season it could well have been a different story.

Stead on Robins - "The main thing for me this season was that I had a full pre-season, even though I got messed about massively by Mark Robins. I didn't go away on tour with them and was training with the kids, week to week."

Stead on Robins - "The main thing for me this season was that I had a full pre-season, even though I got messed about massively by Mark Robins. I didn't go away on tour with them and was training with the kids, week to week." Sounds like Stead was possibly a player "made available" that Robins didn't necessarily want? If that's the case, Robins was probably correct in his assessment, didn't necessarily have the final say on transfers in all cases, and may indicate we're operating in a way which limits our capability, irrespective of who the manager is??? Or I'm possibly reading too much into things... and quite rightly Stead was training with the kids when we had Vaughan, Wells, Paterson, Ward ahead of him in the first team.

Stead was sold to Blackburn in the 2004 season for just over a million. His 6 very important goals in the second half of that season played a vital part in keeping Blabkburn in the premier league, and later earned them massive premier league revenue . I felt that Stead returned to town after seeing out his better years, but another player who seems to have been totally re motivated at another club..

I don't hate Stead, it's just that I've never rated him as a striker because apart from his early days at Town and Blackburn, he's done nowt to impress me and can only be classified as a "run of the mill " average striker. The fact that he's turned out for around 10 different clubs over the past 11 seasons says it all, because had he been any good many of these would have retained him. He's always lacked the true aggression a successful striker needs, plus he could have done with a bit more meat on his gangly frame. However, football is all about opinions and we are all entitled to have our own, even if this sometimes upsets other fans. Probably was a run of the mill championship striker throughout his best years. Nowt wrong with that. If he hadn't been any good, then none of those clubs would have wanted him and hed have quickly dropped down the divisions. He was POTS at bristol. They loved him. Think it might have been different for him back here if hed have been picked early last season when he was on form, but all he got was short cameos with Robins preferring Paterson ( for reasons that escaped me as he was bobbins really). By the time Steady got a run of starts his form had gone and he looked well short of what we needed. It was a good signing on paper. A proven experienced player at this level and one who knew the club and area and was prepared to come here and not be one of the big earners. A gamble well worth taking. can't wish him well for the chickens though just cos its them . He'll do well at L1 level because he still has a quality about his touch and vision that not many have at that level, even if physically he's well past his prime.

I remember Jon Stead from his days in the academy, really nice lad and I don't think that has changed. It should have been a good move back here but it wasn't. I don't care who he is playing for I wish him well. If he finishes his playing days at Bradford that would probably suit him and he looks like he has slotted in there really well. He was jerked around by managers a lot through his career, twice by Roy Keane, which is horrible bad luck, and, it would appear, by Mark Robins. Good luck to him, hope he does really well at Bradford.

nick.. you and I have to hope that the club in allowing him to go had other options ready and waiting. If it is as it appears, we haven't, then its clear powell has told him he has no chance whatsoever of playing for us. Powell isn't going to eat humble pie and the club are not going to admit they didn't or haven't got a plan b.. are they? ? the plan b seems to be everyone at the club crossing their fingers for Vaughan and Wells... maybe somebody forgot to cross theirs??? Stead needs to play at Bradford and get a further deal there, another run of games here struggling and getting stick does not help us or him.

All the money Deano pays to the management team and uncle Ross W , and we end up with one first team striker. Poor.

trusting to luck and hope and the odd good performance to get just enough points. hoping that blackpool and 2 others continue to struggle very badly..
hoping that in the future ffp might actually be enforced and help us out, when football is about Saturday or the next game and has been for sometime.
this club has to be here, we have to stay here.. this season is very, very important.. 4 months could easily define the next few years..

Glad he's getting regular football, you don't want to be on the bench week in week out when you know you are in the twilight of your career. Enjoyed the little feature they did on him football focus today.
