Motivation isn't the issue with VLP. It is getting him to engage his brain for 90 minutes that is the problem. He was the same old VLP last night, does something amazing and then keeps giving it away when trying stupid flicks etc. His use of the overlapping full back was much improved though so hopefully Jan has sorted that bit of his game out The wide positions are a tough one to call. I'd say the pecking order is currently Diakhaby Pritchard Mbenza VLP Kachunga Koroma Quaner Rowe Pritchard is a strange one. I just don't see him as a wide man, but also don't see where else he would fit in Jan's system. On the other hand, he has proven quality at this level. So much so that we paid rather a lot of money for him. As wingers you'd have to put both VLP and Quaner above him on that list. Yet his Championship credentials suggest he should be one of the first on the teamsheet. A bit of a conundrum.

I've slagged him off a lot on here, physically he's miles short of the what you need in his position at the top level. But he's quality at this level Over a full season of both playing 90 minutes, Pritchard would contribute far more goals and assists than VLP would. Might not have you off your seat as often but the end result would be better

Both have a lot of work to do to deserve to be up there, jury well and truly out on those two at the mo. Lets see how they go without the excuses of last season. Looking forward to seeing what they can offer but tbh not holding out a great deal of hope, especially with Mbenza. Diakhaby at least looked decent in one game.

Jan seems reluctant to use him there but being one of the 2 midfielders ahead of the sitting midfield supplying the passes to our front 3 would see him flourish at this Championship standard.
It's hard to see how he would fit in there though with so much competition in there already, even discounting Billing, we have Mooy, Brown, O'Brien, Bacuna, Daly and High who have played there this preseason If we are going to use Hogg as our sitting midfielder of the 3.

I'm not 100% but I'm pretty sure he played as an wide man for Brentford & ended up getting in the PFA team of the year.

Rather than wingers and centre forwards, it’s a front three. I’d be more confident if it was Pritchard getting shots away cutting in than the wide players. At championship level more space should increase the goals but it’s good to have options, we may see all get a chance at some point.

When we were promoted i said in a couple of threads that only Mooy, Schindler and maybe VLP were good enough for the Prem. I stand by that and think i have been proved right. I also get frustrated by him, mostly because of too many touches...but i have no doubt about his ability. He scores in a friendly against Doncaster and that makes him good enough for the PL? Bizarre is an understatement. I said that is said this in the season we were promoted. I said Mooy and Schindler and MAYBE VLP. I stand b that and it has been borne out.

If he's allowed to cut in, he has a hell of a shot. It was never possible in the PL but in the Championship, he will find pockets of space.

If he works as hard as he did down at Southampton then he'll be a real asset. He was on something that day sprinting all over the place. Shame it was 37 games too late

I totally get the points his detrators make, just in some cases they seem exaggerated and/or irrational to me.
Creepy - just as I typed that, my phone identified there are new VLP highlights on Youtube.

You see I could understand it if you pulled him up on his short comings, struggles in the final third/ decision making but to say he’ll never make a team player is laughable. The guys a bit of a showboating speedy winger yet he’s willing to help the team out with hard graft which flair players are known not to do. Our promotion season clearly shits on your statement.

Was the weak link in our promotion team and if Palmer and Brown could of stayed fit he would of been a bench player i gave him the benefit of doubt then because we never had the cash to blow as for a a team man the lad works hard but when you need good link up play and movement the guy is miles off.

I stand b that and it has been borne out. ] It didn’t take Nostradamus to predict Mooy and Schindler would do well. As for “VLP maybe”.....you could have “predicted” that for any of our squad members and been just as right as you were with VL. Or, to put it another way...wrong😉

I am hoping that we have someone in the squad for the left wing position who is a step up from the 2016/7 Championship VLP in terms of end product (the all round game was good). Happy if that's VLP himself, but hopefully we have more competition.

He didn't, he played at 10 in a 4231 at Brentford.
He played wide before that at Swindon and later at Norwich where he was played in a number of positions, latterly as he couldn't get in at 10 for Maddison.
