Agreed. Going to be a lot of disappointed players and maybe those who are most realistic will get settled early whilst those who refuse to adjust to reality in time could be left without a contract. Especially with salary cap in lower leagues (is that confirmed?) Is a salary cap, a cap on what you can pay an individual player, or the total amount you can pay a squad? I guess it must be player but £50k a week still sounds pretty generous for League 1

A further reason for players to get their contracts sorted early

Just read comments from Cowley on Examiner App re the Transfer Window. As we are a “working class” club we will only be signing “working class” players. I assume that means we won’t be looking at any players from “Posh”.

Your post made me smile, but in all seriousness I don't care about our players backgrounds as long as they have the right qualities. I think Cowley realises there is a disconnect between many of the players and the fans. Alot of the players are seen as not caring about the club and not wanting to be here. He wants to create a team spirit that includes everybody involved in the club. I don't think for one moment he'll base his recruitment on social class - more that the players have the right qualities i.e.they have the right technical qualities but also have the right attitude. No point signing a great player if they are a potential trouble maker. We've had enough of those recently! I just hope he doesn't plan to turn us into pragmatic, physical team with little flair. We need those qualities, but I also want to see some skill and creativity too.

What about his recruitment so far - ESR, Willock, King, Toffolo, Stearman - makes you concerned that he’ll ‘turn us into pragmatic, physical team with little flair’? This myth that the Cowleys are only proponents of hoofball needs to die. I mean, where the hell has it come from? Is it because they’re English? Recruited from the lower leagues? The stats don’t back it up, the recruitment doesn’t back it up, and fans of their previous clubs don’t back it up. It’s just weird.

We've hardly been a team showing loads of flair and creativity this season have we? Now that may be due to the circumstances we have been in, but if anything we've become more and more pragmatic as the season has progressed. I can only judge on what I've seen with my own eyes. I now see a team that is far more direct and pragmatic. Almost every set piece goes long and high. Even our throw-ins are chuckled high up the line in the vain hope we may win the first header. This may have been due to our relegation struggle, but it gives me cause for concern. Also, the constant talk about the need for a 'point of reference' i.e. a target man makes me wonder about the preferred style for next season. Having a target man does not necessarily mean we will play direct football, but it suggests there is a good chance we will. I hope my concerns are unfounded. Time will tell. Stearman and King are strange players to mention to back up your argument. Stearman is a traditional centre half and Andy King is hardly a player to get you off your seat. The Cowleys have a reputation for long ball tactics. Is it fully justified? I don't know, but it won't have come from nowhere. It may be exaggerated, but it's not come from thin air. Its not because they are English: there are plenty of English managers who don't play that way. Perhaps it's because they managed in the lower leagues where that sort of football is more prevalent. Perhaps other fans have seen it with their own eyes? I haven't made my mind up about the Cowleys yet. There are too many exceptional circumstances to consider. I hope they are given the opportunity to rebuild the squad and implement the tactics they prefer. Hopefully that will involve playing more attacking, creative football than we've seen for the majority of this season. That may happen, but IMO there is evidence to suggest they may go down a different route. Time will tell.

You've always been a bit of a purist Andy - nothing wrong with that of course - but I personally wouldn't give a toss if the Cowleys made us revert to long-ball "gerrit forward" stuff - IF IT MEANT that we had some goals and some excitement. For me, goals are the crucial element.
I go back 50+ years watching Town and the teams that gave me the most excitement were the Buxton/Warnock/Greaves teams. Perhaps Ian Greaves team had a few more flair players - not many - but the others were mainly effective, powerful get-it-in-their-penalty-area-as-often-as-possible teams.
Perhaps I'm too results-driven but the season I enjoyed most was the Buxton/Robins/Kindon etc etc season. Give me that any day over the more silky skills. Ideally, of course, we'll get both as they don't have to be mutually exclusive. Town's winner against West Brom had a bit of everything...

I suppose that we should be rooting for a Fulham promotion. Probably our best chance of getting something back on Kongolo. Likewise West Brom May be back in for grant if they go up

Is a salary cap, a cap on what you can pay an individual player, or the total amount you can pay a squad? That's my reading of it anyway. The proposed salary cap of 18m includes entire spend on players, bonuses and even agents fees

I honestly don’t get this working class stuff Schindler is very much middle class - his dad is a solicitor and he’s said in interviews he’d have gone into that profession if he’d not been a footballer. He the best professional on the books So what does a working class player mean?

I think the Cowleys are pure pragmatists. They do whatever they need to do to get the job done. If they’re afforded a superior squad they’ll open the game out. If not they’ll time waste, shrink the game time down and eek out a result (or at least that’s the plan).
I think they’ve tuned into something very important to the culture of town fans. We love someone who tries more than anything. There’s been some average footballers get hero status from fans because of the effort they put in.
And that’s really not just a given for all clubs. I used to work in the Forest ground and in my opinion they valued skill/ technique more than effort. It’s a shame for Diakhaby that he’s got neither.

Ideally, of course, we'll get both as they don't have to be mutually exclusive. Town's winner against West Brom had a bit of everything... We have differing opinions on the football we like to see. Nothing wrong in that. I want to see us win above all else, but although I don't expect Man City-style footie every match, I do prefer to be entertained during matches more often than not. Otherwise I'd save myself a load of money and follow the scores on the Internet. Usually, when I get into these type of discussions, someone will say something like, "Well, I suppose you'd prefer to see us playing tippy-tappy football in our own half". No I wouldn't, and football is not that black and white. It's not a case of either John Beck-style football or passing it ineffectively in your own half. Those are extremes. Wagner is often derided for his negative football, but his teams in the Championship played high energy passing football that looked to dominate the opposition in all areas of the pitch. That's my ideal. Now I accept that Wagner has gone and so has his football. The gegenpressing actually disappeared before he did! The Cowleys are their own men and deserve time to build their own style. At times we have played good stuff undervthem, but we've also played alot of dour, pragmatic stuff. Hopefully because of the circumstances they have been operating in. As I say, I don't expect Cruyff-style total football from Town, but I have to say my heart sinks when I see every goal kick and set piece hit long and high, no matter where it is on the pitch. And when I start to see throw ins being chucked up the line rather than being used as means to restart the play with a quick throw to someone's feet, I start to fear the worst. Perhaps my concerns will be unfounded. Perhaps they won't, but the Cowleys will find a way to get results playing a more pragmatic approach. As I keep saying, time will tell.

Cowley has definitely set expectations we’ve got nothing to spend, will have to buy cheap young players, loans and a few older heads on free
Chairman Phil will undoubtedly think we can win the champions league with the squad
Presumably he’ll also reconcile his statements 12 months ago re not needing to sell anyone and then selling £25m of players to the lack of a budget now
And before he and Devlin mentions Covid this applied in January when we were somehow over budget
Good luck Cowley - you’ll need it!

I’m hoping you are right re the fact that they have tuned into the Town fans. They must realise the strength of feeling re our previous poor recruitment. If that makes them more determined to get it right then that can only be a good thing.

Only 2 scenarios I can think of & I hope I'm way off the mark:
1) a takeover had been agreed on the proviso we stay in the Championship & they want their own men (pure hope & prayers on my part)
2) we stay up, the Cowleys go to PH & say we need 17 new players, here they are & PH shits himself & fires them saying they don't have the same vision for the team etc etc
Still, let's wait & see eh?
