I’m fine with Vallejo & Crichlow hanging around, can see the sense with Campbell and at a (big) stretch can see the benefit of giving Keogh a deal. But Bacuna & Mbenza? No way, they’re a couple of fuckin chancers. Not the ideal start for the close season for me and hardly inspires me to want to renew as it stands. Do you really think they'll still be here come the close of the window? Seriously? I have absolutely no idea. Let’s hope not!

Do we have any idea the new wages of Bacuna and Mbenza? Surely it's at least a considerable wage drop? If their contracts have been renewed(not renegotiated like seems to be the case with Campbell) I don’t believe football clubs can offer lower wages in that instance.I could be completely wrong on that but i believe that to be the case. Therefore it’s likely they will be on the same money.Be surprised if both don’t have deals already lined up. On keogh I think it was the more obvious option out of him stearman and elphick based on relative wages and also the amount of recent games played. With REG and sarr already here and as Maynard hinted at possibly 2 new centre halves you would imagine that would be enough. One new lad as competition for reg and one as competition for sarr(in theory).Four centre halves should be enough for a season(I’m going to put last season down as an anomaly)what signing keogh does mean is that should anything ridiculous happen and we find ourselves in the same situation around jan/Christmas time where only have 1/2 fit centre halves you don’t have to go out and look for an emergency signing such as keogh as he is already there. Would also expect club to see how chrichlow performs pre season before maybe making a late decision to send him out on loan at least until January. That’s all just my take on it though so I now expect the complete opposite of all that to happen.

I don’t get the hatred towards Keogh one bit. He’s had a solid career that he’s put his guts into. One mistake on a night out by being a passenger in a car doesn’t make him a bad guy. We’ve always loved a player who gives heart and soul, especially when it is that over technique & natural ability that has elevated them to where they are. Real hypocritical the way he is slagged off yet the likes of Bullock, Jock Morrison & Jepson are still revered. They all had far worse misdemeanours. Give the bloke a break and trust those who work with him day in day out. This 1000%. I never understand the nostalgic pining, among those of a certain vintage, for footballers to be what they used to be like. Then the moment any player exhibits any sort of personality, individuality, or human qualities, they're suddenly the biggest disgrace known to humanity and an indictment of the current state of the sport We have a prime minister who is supposed to set standards no need to say anymore apart from no ones perfect but the ones who, like to pass judgment!

We are starting to bring our young players into first team action. We have coaches who can coach, they are hopefully good at doing that. What we need alongside is experience. For that we have players like Hogg, Keogh & Campbell. Players who have had very good careers, have an excellent work ethic and have come up against top class opponents. If you want to progress the youngsters you need the old heads.

We also need some leaders on the pitch, two of those mentioned won't be playing much i hope, therefore we need a central defender who can lead and organise and a goalkeeper in a similar vein. Not too old either for the outfield player, 26 to 29 yrs old would do nicely.

My worry is that a sharp agent could have got all this talk going about interest in them to get the extension triggered because they will be on half (or less)their current rate once they find new clubs. Even if offers do come in I can't see anyone else paying them what we do, so we may have to pay them off to get them out of the door. So fee what fee? It could quite easily have been cheaper to have let them go.

All the above could apply. If contracts automatically triggered due to amount of games played it maybe that the club had no choice. In which case both players in a strong position. They can see what interest is out there and maximise what other clubs maybe willing to offer whilst knowing if nothing comes off they stay with us on at very least the same month they were on for at least one more year. That’s essentially what Pritchard did this season. May boil down to what both players actually want.

They'll have a good idea about interest or not in the likes of Mbenza and Bacuna and it's generally when players are tearing it up and performing consistently well. Neither of those are, just the occasional flash of brilliance. It'll be a few weeks before the full squad takes shape.

So good character, hard worker, good example, defends from the front. I agree with all that but it’s testament to what we’ve come to expect from this board that this is what we’re happy/content with in a forward. Better than Sonogo so he‘ll do. What are you expecting? That we have an array of 30 goal a season strikers to pick from each game? Youre supporting the wrong club if you are! If you agree with all those attributes and can see a value in them, that's what's the issue with having a striking option with them? And that's what he'll be next season.. an option. We arent going to keep Campbell instead of bringing in another striker or two if that's your concern. What we've come to expect from this board is that they can't just magic tens of millions of pounds out of thin air. No I don’t expect 30 goals a season at all. I’d like someone capable of scoring more than an average of 5 though.

Quite happy for FC to stay. He’s a workaholic and will be good for the last 15 mins or so against tired defenders. Not sure about Keogh though.. came in to try and tighten the defence in which we then went on to concede the most goals in the league. Hopefully it’s for just a coaching role as he shouldn’t be anywhere near the starting XI To be fair to Keogh, he didn't really come in to try and tighten the defence...it was more of a 'we just need SOMEONE'. He came in because Schindler and Stearman were both injured from early December and we were desperate for some experience so as not to rely solely on Sarr and the still unproven REG. We weren't exactly an impenetrable back-line before those senior defenders were injured. Yes we dropped off and conceded more goals in the second half of the season, but we also lost Toffolo, had Pipa playing through injury and had to rely on the repeatedly unimpressive Duhaney and Brown for much of the second half - with all those full back's playing behind a random combination of Mbenza, Koroma, O'Brien, Bacuna, Holmes, Rowe, Aarons, Thomas from week to week - whilst he's not brilliant, its a bit harsh to denigrate Keogh off the back of that complete picture.

How many someone's will we be looking for at the end of the summer window? The recruitment team will have to up their game to ensure that we are not desperate for someone. Never mind them fitting these acquisitions in to an overall plan with a shape and a style of play with leaders and some pace from somewhere as well. A bit of height would not go a miss. Add that in to the likely departures and I will stop there, as I am depressing myself.

Ideally no "someones" in the summer window, unless we pick up extended injuries during pre-season to players who would otherwise be 1st XI or potentially 1st XIV. There may well be low-risk punts though. Akin to Danny Grant or Sorba Thomas etc, not every player has to be the finished article ready to slot straight in and contribute.

I believe that we are expecting a run of low-risk punts. It was a bit in jest that I mentioned :- fitting these acquisitions in to an overall plan with a shape and a style of play with leaders and some pace from somewhere as well. A bit of height would not go a miss. It would seem a little far fetched to believe that we will even attempt to do this in this window, based on recent history and the one play that we have been highly linked to.

But still no harm in having a player like Campbell around IMO. Have I missed this link with the Brazilian kid from Flemengo being almost a done deal on here? Not seen it discussed. It was mentioned in the South America piece they do on talk sport this afternoon. Some kid called Lazaro and we're in 'advanced talks' Im a bit surprised ( as was the journalist on talksport ) because if its the right kid, he had a £60m release clause in his contract when he was 17 a couple of years ago!!! Describes him as a 'wonder kid' on the article about him I found. Attacking midfielder. Only played 8 first team games and yet to score. Brazilian U 18 international.

Campbell is a decent enough back up striker or playing in a two but we definitely need some good reinforcements in that area. Those few extra goals can make a big difference in tight games. Lazaro has his own thread on the transfer sub board.

Completely agree. That and the fact that he's won his unfair dismissal case suggests that - although he could perhaps have set a better example that night - he clearly wasn't nearly as complicit as the players who....Derby kept on. He was a decent signing in the circumstances, during an almost unprecedented injury crisis in that particular position - and I don't see any reason why he can't go on to have a similar influence to the likes of Whitehead and Hudson. I have no issues with him re-signing, given the new role and the fact that we're quite clearly looking for new recruits at the back. Setting an example and being a mentor tend to come hand in hand though. I don't disagree, but surely mentoring is more about passing on your experiences and trying to get people to take lessons from that - good and bad - rather than setting a shining example and expecting people to take your lessons as gospel. If you're an alcoholic, whose words would have the most impact - those of an ex-addict, or someone who's never touched a drop? I'm a million miles away from being a professional footballer, and it's a world I can't relate to; but I genuinely think that given the choice between being mentored by Tony Adams or by Michael Owen, I'd take the flawed but (possibly?) reformed over the bland and squeaky-clean any day of the week - better to learn from people's mistakes, than some idealised notion of infallibility. (With the caveat that Owen was widely rumoured to be a massive gambling addict...)

Always remember Danny Baker, when he did the original 606, going on about how he'd rather be stuck in a desert or jungle with Vinnie Jones than Gary Linker as he'd have more chance of surviving with a nasty bastard than someone who was never even booked.

No problem with Campbell staying.
He's a solid quality player who loves the place.
What I don't understand is combining him with Rhodes. We'll have two strikers over 30, plus Ward who now seems injury prone.
Hardly a strike force to build a team around.

If Keogh has been signed to play every minute of every game next season then keeping him is a terrible decision.
If keeping him as a mentor means that he'll be encouraging the rest of the squad to drive pissed up and crash their cars, then it's a terrible decision.
Campbell just runs around a lot. Definitely has no effect on opposition defences building an attack from the back because as we all know, defenders don't do that anyway, they just defend. Keeping him also means that we're definitely not going to sign any other strikers. No point keeping him as an alternative option or cover/competition for places.
BacBenza? Keeping them is stupid. Of course, if we'd released them and they'd got a club elsewhere, the club would have been stupid to forego the transfer fee. Naturally, if they are sold then I definitely won't acknowledge that the club got it right.

MaynardBlue has already clarified on here that Keogh will only a back-up next season with, hopefully, two new CBs coming in. He's apparently been very impressive behind the scenes and that's what the club is looking to develop. MB has also said that moves for Bacuna and Mbenza are already lined up.

No problem with Campbell staying. He's a solid quality player who loves the place. What I don't understand is combining him with Rhodes. We'll have two strikers over 30, plus Ward who now seems injury prone. Hardly a strike force to build a team around. Ward will be 30 in December also. We could really do with a striker with a turn of pace that can give us another option that's either a youngster on loan or someone like Dion Charles who's coming into his prime on the back of a good season.
