Not sure if this is the right place for it but I just saw this on Twitter... Town goalkeeper getting roughed-up a bit! That was par for the course. I understand that the forwards used to be able to shoulder charge the goalkeeper over the line with the ball and a goal would be given. I don't think that they would understand the modern game.

An interview with Steve Spriggs, as seen in yesterday's programme. Nice one, tomorrow's lunch break reading sorted

I can also heartily recommend Lee's article about John Haselden from yesterday's programme too. I, for one, never realised that he was an early advocate of play-it-out-from-the-back kamikaze football as far back as 1977!

Come on, you know you've all been waiting for interviews with Tim Hotte and Neal Trotman!
That's the next two interviews coming up in the QPR and Cardiff programmes in a few weeks.

Far more interesting than another "Darren Bullock talks about Brentford" interview.

Ref Carlos, sort of, are there any you've gone to interview with a preconception from their playing days, who've surprised you or made you change your opinion on them? IE you don't like Carlos, but hypothetically if you interviewed him (I know lol) and he won you over?

IE you don't like Carlos, but hypothetically if you interviewed him (I know lol) and he won you over? Not yet. Most of the players I've spoken to are players that were before my time. I've done a few (Tony Carss, John Thorrington, Neal Trotman, Lee Fowler, Iffy Onuora) that I saw play, but not many. If I carry on doing it for the foreseeable future, I imagine I'll come across certain players that perhaps were disliked, or I disliked, and my opinion may change. I fully intend to approach the likes of Stan Ternent, Jan Siewert and even God forbid Mark Fotheringham in the distant future. Or players that weren't necessarily liked or players that didn't have good spells here. They might take some convincing, but I've managed to convince numerous musicians, who have never given interviews before, to share their stories so hopefully I can do the same here. I think it's important that the stories are out there, good and bad. But at the minute, I've not had too many surprises. I like to think that some of the interviews have revealed new stuff and new information, which is my sole intention, really. And everyone I've spoken to so far have been approachable and helpful. Brian Tickell was apprehensive but I think that's been one of the more interesting ones this season. For example, while I like Iain Dunn, and his interview was good (and I had to cut so much out), I preferred doing the Simon Collins one, for example, as I don't think he'd ever done one. It made it all the more poetic that he'd spent much of the interview telling me how brilliant Neil Warnock was, only for Warnock to get the job here about two weeks later and Simon's interview was in the programme for Warnock's first game back. That wasn't planned!

This is kind of how it all started. On the 2nd October 2022 I had the pleasure of interviewing former Town player Bob Parker. I had intended for this interview to appear on the Heritage site in due course but it never happened so I asked the club's programme editor if he could make sure of it. Surprisingly, he said yes and published it in the programme for the Sunderland night match in November 2022. The only part I didn't write was the final paragraph... This was one of my favourite ones as he'd never spoken about his time in football and he gave a brilliant insight into life at Leeds Road in the 1950s and 1960s. I think the National Service stuff is particularly golden. If anyone's interested, you can read Bob's story below.

Because if not and you've only been doing this since 2022, then WOW. No, I studied IT. Only started "writing" in 2018 when I was putting the book together, which came out in 2019. Then just before lockdown, I took the decision to write my second, which was on music. That came out in November 2020. I kinda got involved with the Heritage Project off the back of the book and the first thing I ever "wrote" was the interview I did with Graham Bailey, in February 2021. Graham of course is our oldest living player but had gone under the radar and I'd never found any information on him, dead or alive. So one night, I ended up just trying to see if I could find anything and I happened across some information and a newspaper piece that had him alive in 2020 as a 100-year-old, the dates matched up and so did the photograph. So I did some digging, ended up making contact and that's how that happened. htafc-heritage.com/posts/15/an-interview-with-towns-oldest-living-player-graham-baileyAfter that I did a few articles here and there, some obituaries, and the odd interview usually via written answers but it was the Bob Parker one that gave me the motivation as it seemed the club, or at least the programme editor, were willing to publish such stuff.

Reid was actually a decent player. Scored at Valley Parade in that 4-3 win in 1994. Fair to say the locals weren't happy π

I'm probably flogging a dead horse with these, but if anyone is interested, Neal Trotman spoke about his time at Town in last night's programme. It was an interesting chat where he spoke about how his spell at Town made him feel like a 'proper' football again after having a bad time at Preston where he suffered injury problems and a stroke in training. He still loves Town as well.

One of my favourite interviews was with John Thorrington, mostly because he was the first player I interviewed that I'd actually watched as a fan. As far as I'm aware, he's one of the first players to talk at length about the administration period of 2003 and his view is perhaps unique as he was the PFA representative that season and had heavy involvement. He also credits that period with having a positive effect on his life. If anyone is interested:

This interview, with Brian Hill, was a nice one to do. Brian's daughter contacted me in November 2022 as Brian's 80th birthday was imminent and was wondering if the club would be able to send him a birthday card. I put her in touch with Andy Booth and also sent a birthday card from the Heritage Project. Around this time, I'd visited Mike Hellawell (RIP), who was Hill's wing partner in the 1960s, and interviewed him and he'd mentioned that he'd never been to the new ground and would love to go, he suggested perhaps a game where we played one of his old clubs. So I contacted Boothy and asked if this was possible and suggested the Birmingham City match (Feb 2023). In the meantime, I'd been to visit Brian Hill and he'd also mentioned that he would quite like to visit the new ground as well. He'd been back to Huddersfield a few years ago and tried to find Leeds Road but had got lost! So to tie in with his 80th birthday celebrations, I asked Boothy if it would be possible to invite Brian to the same game as Mike, without them knowing. He organised it with Brian's daughter and it was all set. It just so happens that the Birmingham match was Warnock's first game back and our first win in ages and both Brian and Mike reunited for the first time in about 50 years and they both enjoyed it. It was a pleasure to be involved with it. So this interview was published about a month before that Birmingham match back in February 2023.
