When I was a teeny bopper a very successful Scottish footy club called Dundee United were nicknamed as The Terrors or by some others as The Tangerines... but these days for some reason they are referred to by many up here as ‘The Arabs’ - I’ve no idea how that change came about (a star player maybe) or perhaps Arabs maybe wear black robes over tangerine - I’ve really no idea but I wish perhaps The Arabs that are gonna bankroll Newcastle to being the richest club in the world, could toss a few million of loose change shrapnel in the direction of say a club like Dundee United and shake up the laughing stock of the two team top League in Scotland (really one team league since the millennium) ! Got me googling in my dinner hour 😁 It all dates back to a match during the winter months of the 1962/63 season. Dundee United were due to take on Albion Rovers in a Scottish Cup tie, but the weather was so bad (Worse than normal for Scotland) that the pitch was almost unplayable. The first problem was a layer of ice and snow, which had covered the pitch, but United weren’t going to let a bit of ice stop the game going ahead. So, rumors have it, that they hired a tar burner to melt the ice…but the pitch underneath still completely unplayable. That meant they had to resort to plan B….SAND and lots of it. There was so much sand spread onto the pitch that it eventually looked like a desert, with hardly any grass to be seen. Not that the makeshift pitch affected United as they sealed their passage to the next round of the competition with a 3-0 victory over Albion Rovers. Infact, the United players’ adapted so well to the desert like playing conditions that people started referring to them as ‘The Arabs’. Wow, that's some major trivia, getting banked for the future!

Thats the only bit of that that needs questioning!! I dunno, I'd question his idea of a sexy nurse 😁 The costume was sexy, the contents entirely not

Japan fully deserved it.... I wonder if Yuta would have started for them? The unanswerable question is 'would they still have won if he had?'

One of the very rare times that there was desert type playing conditions in Bonnie Scotland even if it wasn’t through natural sunshine conditions (1976 apart it never was and never will be here) ! But many thanks for clearing that up for me Porroh as I’ve always wondered why they were also known as The Arabs... The old adage is there with this one - You learn something new every day - Especially on DATM for sure !!!

Lots of fans from all countries wearing the Arab headgear and getting into the spirit of things trying to have a good time, im surprised the woke mob haven't cited it as 'racism' and 'cultural inappropriation', bet Linekars dying to. It would seem they draw the line at Crusaders

It would seem they draw the line at Crusaders Not sure the crusades even got as far as the Qatari peninsula? And it wasn't just Muslims the crusades were against; it was against Jewish tribes too, anyone who wasn't Christian basically. And all to feed the ego of a pope who was afraid of being overshadowed by his forebears. Religion? Fuck it

NEWCASTLE told fans they CAN wear Arabic clothing in support of the new owners in a shock U-turn. Anti-racism groups such as Kick It Out hit out heavily at the supporters who dressed in tunics and tea towels 'unless they would ordinarily wear such attire'. To think a football club can tell you what you can and can't wear? The amount of times I've gone out New Years' Eve in fancy dress costumes that would now be considered offensive is probably beyond count. Off the top of my head I've gone out as: A vicar in fishnets and high heels (women are right, they are hell lol); Freddie Starr's thick Hitler, complete with L & R wellies: A Belsen intern with striped pyjamas and a yellow star (alongside two Jewish mates also dressed that way so don't diss me); A Bedouin warrior complete with braided hair, although not blackface; A Muslim Imam, carrying a watering can if I needed the toilet; A sexy nurse; A Native American, complete with headdress, tomahawk, etc. How many of those would I be accused of cultural appropriation or sexism nowadays, despite being a lover of history being the reason I wore most of them? I've done the new years eve fancy dress thing too, used to be quite a thing round our end and then down to the frontier, seems to be only a really small amount out in fancy dress nowadays, seems to have died a death.

Yeah I've noticed that. Batley's "Golden Mile" used to be chock a block of mad fancy dress and couldn't move in Hecky for blokes in drag. But like you say, it doesn't seem to be a "thing" like it used to be. Maybe it's just coz blokes (and ladies) like me and my mates have got too old for that shit, as Danny Glover would say. Or maybe people have stopped dressing up in case they get accused of some ism? Last year I went out as a Town fan

A lad i went college with did the Jackson five with the wife and kids(the fifth was in the wifes belly). His daughter was only about 6 or 7 year old in the photo. When she went to Uni and got a part time job, she lasted about a week before someone saw the photo via FB and she was immediately sacked. The need to be offended is ruining the world

I'd have tried taking that to a tribunal; although it may not have been worth it financially after just a week, it's the principle! I was like you turbo regarding fancy dress, til we came back to UK and saw the nutcases down Batley. The non-dressed up were in a minority so thought if you can't beat em. And depending on the costume it can be a great ice-breaker too

You wouldn't believe how many women put their hand up my habit when I went out as a nun. And the sexy nurse? Fuck, if I'd been a real female there could have been loads of charges brought unless I was a lesbian

Good to see TV companies keeping up the tradition of focusing on nice looking young ladies during lulls in play.

Turning into a World Cup of pleasant surprises for a neutral like myself who’s team (Scotland) isn’t anywhere near it...
Another two tonight with America holding England and Equador getting a very creditable draw with Holland - The group is still wide open like plenty others...
Wales will be truly kicking themselves tonight !!!

The unanswerable question is 'would they still have won if he had?' 5-1... Yuta hat-trick, all 3 goals being awarded by hawkeye... As you may know, I live in Japan. In my local shopping center there are life-sized cardboard figures of the first eleven promoting a huge shop selling every kind of Samurai Blue merchandise you could imagine. Every one of them played against Germany except...yes, Yuta is there, beaming from the back row. I think you may also be able to buy a shirt with his name on it. Gutted for the lad, absolutely gutted.

England played out for a draw because they are waiting to see what Netherlands and the Ecuador Vs Senegal results are.If Ecuador or Senegal are second come the end of their group stage matches then England will go out and try to finish top in their group.

I certainly recall having a good night out at uni early 90s where about 20 of us were blacked up as Zulus and half a dozen lads who were non white were whitened up and in red tunics.. eeh the good old days

Nice to see an official FIFA rep encouraging gamesmanship, saying that Ronaldo was clever in winning that penalty.
Franchise football is their goal.

I know franchise sport is part of American sporting culture, and i get how it can work in club football, but with club and international football being different how would it work, by the way im not contradicting you for the sake of it TMFA.
