Listening to Warnock after the Plymouth game, this result and team selection shouldn’t have surprised anyone. Big game on Sat, it’ll be interesting to see if any of the team tonight have done enough to get promoted into the squad. Annoying for the supporters who went, but this has been a competition that we’ve never gone that far in, if memory serves. You'd have to worry for us on Saturday if truth be known. The players will give 100% no doubt but genuinely, where do we have the quality to get a result against Leicester? Unlikely that I’ll be able to go on Sat which is a shame. I really don’t know what to expect though, we’re hardly a consistent team, so we might pull something out of the bag unexpectedly? Here’s hoping anyway. Nowt worse than wind up merchant Vardy cupping his jug ears…

Pat Jones makes Dave Cowling look like Darren Bullock. Couldn’t tackle a plate of fish and chips. A few criticising Jones tonight and have to agree. Jumped out of a couple of tackles, Warnock won’t stand for that. His injury record is probably causing that, not wanting to get injured.

It probably is but the fastest way to getting injured again is by jumping out of tackles; you’re taught that at junior school

Was the red card for Headley justified?
1 or 3 game ban?

For all the praise Harrat is getting for tonight, rightly so, his aerial prowess needs working on big time, he is really poor in the air. Was so frustrating seeing Maxwell wait until the Boro defence had got back in position time and time again before booting it for the head of Harratt or Jones. I had to check the stats as I didn't recall Harratt winning a header all night and I was right. Competed for eleven aerial duals and lost eleven. It made a big difference Hudlin coming on because when the ball went up front, it stayed there, or he got a flick on. Harratt has his strengths but he doesn't look ready to be playing up front on his own yet.

Harratt looked like our only reserve who is "nasty" enough for the men's game. Rhodes never stopped working. Poor old Scott High looks like a change of club is his only answer. REG - the more I see him the more I think he is going backwards. I would have no idea what his strengths are. Pat Jones - came on, game passed him by, didn't seem too keen to get involved. Not convinced by Maxwell. Twice rushed off his line and was beaten to the ball. Yuta - looked comfortable and a class above everybody round him. Totally agree about REG seems to be going backwards and High is getting a touch of the Schofield's, he was very well thought of but again hasn't kicked on. It will be interesting to see how Austerfield develops apparently he's filled out a bit. Jones first touch doesn't seem to be that good. Nice to hear Yuta coming back well. Have always rated Harratt as a striker just needed to sort his head out.

I left after their 3rd goal because I have to get up at 6am tomorrow to go to work. After 65 minutes I said to the bloke in front of me that I thought it was a good opportunity to give our tall attacker a good run out. When I returned to the car and switched on Radio Leeds, I heard Hudlin had scored. I'm 100% behind Warnock, but it doesn't mean I agree with all his decisions - Hudlin should have been on long before he appeared, and I was also disappointed that we didn't see him on the field at Plymouth.

Not sure by these REG going backwards points
He isn’t going to be a centre half - we knew that, Saturday showed that
He came on when we’re already chasing shadows vs 10 men
He had lots of limitations but given budget is a useful squad player who can go a specific role slotting in defensive mid / stopper, cover basic right back role
He’s 24, not a young lad
Overall not sure what’s changed / telling is what we didn’t know

It wasn't just that, in fact that was the bit I was expecting and I'd have given him a 'pass' on that. His ball control was awful, he'd no idea what was going on around him. If he hadn't had the assist, and I still think it was a 'hit and hope' cross, then it was on a par with a Diakaby performance!

As expected for me Some good - Yuta, Jackson, Harratt, Some bad - High, Headley, REG Some ok - Austerfield, Spencer
The above said - we played a boro second string for most of the game and some lads desperately need to move on to play first team football.....high - not good enough imho, spencer on loan, austerfield on loan etc. We are also crying out for a central midfield player and striker..........not to supplement the squad but to start. 2nd half showed how much we miss hogg and he wont get thru more than 30 games a season these days. The back ups arent up to it. Heres hoping we get 2 or 3 and quickly.

The red card is a clear red card. He bundles him over.
There's something really wrong with our shape in midfield. The 2nd goal at the weekend and the 2nd tonight were so similar in that we let a player un through unchallenged with no one closing down. It's a huge gap.
Spencer and Ayina aren't ready, but tonight was a good test and exposure for them.

REG last year had a very specific role of man marking. He followed the best player round the park and that was it. That doesnt need much positional awareness. When he is in a normal position that lack of awareness become very obvious.

Excellent: Harratt Diarra Yuta Rhodes (for effort) Good: Jackson Ayina Hudlin Hogg Average: Austerfield Spencer Maxwell Jones Shite: High ReG Mahoney I think Jones is bloody lucky not to be in the shite group. He was awful, even his cross was a hopeful lob into the box with his 'wrong' foot. I was shocked how bad he was when he came on. I was expecting him to be a bit hesitant at times due to his injury, but he looked lost at times and couldn't do the basics. I was hoping he'd be decent addition to the squad assuming he can stay fit, but not on tonight's performance. Spencer and Headley were very susceptible to the crossfield ball, with neither seeming to know who/what was behind them. I think I'd move Jackson up to the 'Good' group as well. Wasn’t at the game tonight but just seen the highlights. That was a brilliant cross with his weaker foot, not sure how you can be critical of that??

What if you live in a different country? And you pay for an Ifollow season pass to the club for them not to televise cup games and games shown on terrestrial television? Watch for nothing? Sometimes some of us literally can’t pay to see a game.

Chris Maxwell – Tested surprisingly little through a combination of last-ditch defending and wayward Middlesbrough shooting. Can't be blamed on the goals. 6 Brodie Spencer – Misread Daniel Barlaser's long ball as Middlesbrough drew level, which bumps down his grade, but regrouped and had an overall strong game, especially impressing in the second half. 6 Loick Ayina – Generally defensively reliable and didn't put a foot wrong on the ball. A really good centre-back showing for the most part, but unnecessarily over-committed to give Riley McGree the chance to score Boro's third goal - a shame as we'd have gone another mark higher otherwise. 7 Yuta Nakayama – Tested the keeper from a couple of set pieces and looked composed first playing in a back three and then in a back four, though positioning slightly questionable on Boro's second goal. Understandably looked rather gassed by the end Ben Jackson – Started at right wing-back before moving to left-back after Jaheim Headley's early red card. Did some good and important work defensively, but undid that somewhat by letting Isaiah Jones go free in the box to put Boro ahead as well as with some untidy work on the ball. 5 Josh Austerfield – Read the situation well to intercept a stray pass on the edge of the Boro box and tee up Kian Harratt's early goal. Put himself about well and tidy on the ball. 7 Brahima Diarra – Started as an attacking midfielder before being moved across to the right wing after the red card. Gave Hayden Coulson a torrid time out there and earned Town approximately 427 free kicks. 7 Jonathan Hogg – Got more important minutes in his legs, completing the first half and acting as an important marshall for a largely youthful side, especially once down to ten men. 7 Jaheim Headley – Sent off just 13 minutes in for a cynical last-man challenge on Morgan Rogers to stop him getting clean through on goal. 2 Jordan Rhodes – Put himself about well and looked keen to do his share of the work off the ball. Acted as a makeshift midfielder for much of the game. 7 Kian Harratt – Put the keeper under good pressure then finished well as Town bought themselves a cheap opener. Barely in the game second half, through no real fault of his own, with Town under heavy pressure. 7 Substitutes Scott High (for Hogg 46) – Initially a direct replacement for Hogg before moving into a more advanced berth. Chased down opponents keenly, helping to create the late consolation. 7 Rarmani Edmonds-Green (for Diarra 62) – Came on to play Hogg's defensive midfield role. 6 Pat Jones (for Rhodes 62) – Effectively took over from Diarra out on the right flank. Fantastic cross for Kyle Hudlin to score off. 7 Connor Mahoney (for Nakayama 86) – n/a Kyle Hudlin (for Harratt 90) – Came on and made an instant impact with an injury-time goal on his competitive debut. 7 Substitutes not used: Lee Nicholls, Josh Ruffels, Josh Koroma, Sorba Thomas. No rating for our international centre back? Are you Fozza in disguise?

Was the red card for Headley justified? 1 or 3 game ban? Yup. Said he was off as soon as it happened, and so it proved. Even Warnock has said he has no issues with the red card (and if Warnock disagrees with a decision, everyone knows about it), so no arguments. Also it'll be just a 1 game ban as it was just for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity

Good effort with ten men for all but 12 minutes, i want to win every game we play but losing tonight is no big deal, Ayina was laughing all through the game for some reason.

Reading all these threads it seems that only Yuta is going to improve the first eleven.
Maxwell doesn’t seem to have played well, why did we sell Bilo again ?
Hudlin scored again - he seems to do that a lot.
Midfield. Come on town it’s clear to all of us that we need some quality in there.
The anxiousness of the fans - at no new signings- will surely start to rub off onto the players.
So hoped we would start the season off better than this but it’s just the same as last season. We simply lack quality.

No agree On the names But Turton - Agree, but injured (again) missed an entire season & but over 2 injuries by time he gets back. Won’t see him til Christmas. Spencer - promising but not ready - at fault for goal, could have been a couple more when basic wrong side. Will be much better option in time, hopefully sooner than later Hogg - Agree. Obviously miles ahead - question is who behind him to step in if all else fails Rudoni - Likewise. But unless we bring more in further forward he’ll have to play a more advanced role at times Kasumu - DATM darling, maybe it’s his hair style. Injured or suspended more than available. He should be ahead if ever available more than 2 games in a row. Needs to massively step up

Maxwell was hesitant coming off is his line and Ayina saved him on one occasion. Decent keeper but looked rusty Spencer - needs a loan. Potential is there but he looked short of the standard right now Yuta - played well for me. Won't be long before he's back in the first team Ayina - looks a good prospect. Still a bit raw and maybe a loan for half a season would be good Jackson - solid and certainly a good option to have in the squad due to his versatility Headley - red carded so not on the pitch long enough. Previously shown he's good enough though Hogg - played well and we missed his leadership after he was subbed Asterfield - looked neat and tidy. Good size to him as well and I'd probably keep him around rather than loan out. Looks capable of doing a job in a handful of games Diarra - my MoM. there full back couldn't handle him so resorted to kicking him. Ref was useless and gave Diarra no protection. Credit BD despite getting kicked a lot he still wanted to get on the ball and run some more at them. Great prospect Harratt - worked hard. I thought second half we barely laid a glove on their goalie until injury time and think Harratt struggled alone against experienced centre backs Rhodes - did okay. Likely to be his last game and thanks Jordan for all your effort etc down the years
High - did nothing really of note good or bad Jones - poor touch a few times. Didn't really catch the eye Hudlin - should have been on sooner Mahoney - waste of a place of the subs bench. Would rather a B Team lad like Bright or Midgeley had been given a run out
