Hoggy still breaks up play better than anyone else.....kasumu has great energy but hoggy reads it better for me. The issue comes when we have the ball and his reluctance to trust himself to play on the half turn. It slows us down and stops our wing backs moving onto the ball at pace. The time has come to be looking to get him to be less of an influence ON the field but it's not easy - he's been a terrific player for us and if you stuck a mooy type alongside him would still be effective imho.

Even in his pomp he was infinitely better facing the opposition goal. Think back to 16/17 - He'd drop inbetween the CB's to make a 3 when playing out from the back and was comfortable on the ball under those circumstances. Facing his own goal he panics and always has, even if nobody is really near him.

He also had out balls in VLP/schindler/lowe and smith. Also they couldn't press him as well because teams were frightened mooy and the others could hurt them.

Absolutely right regards hoggy,he’s had to read the game better last few years as physically he’s probably lost half a yard to get away with it.Kasumu may come a cropper with that later down the line but as it stands his pace and energy add a lot into the side. I think as I and a few others have said, hoggy should now be selected for certain games, certain game situations and to fill in for injuries.Iv no doubt in the near future that Kasumu will either have to be rested for a game,be suspended or picked up a slight injury this is where hoggy can come in.If the balance of the side is improved as it seems to have been last few games(Birmingham aside) then bringing hoggy in in those games won’t end up with everything looking a bit here there and everywhere. Tbh that’s a place we need to get to throughout the side, where if we have to make 1 or 2 changes because they’re forced, that it doesn’t completely change the level of performance. Back to hoggy though, there should be no issue using him more sparingly. Also in a functioning side who can pass the ball I think you would see him improve on the ball anyway to a degree and make better decisions on it.It’s when the onus is largely on him to progress from the back 3 that he tends to struggle.

Not sure I see Kasumu as the eventual replacement for Hogg. Hes got the tenacity and energy but his ability on the ball would really worry me in that position. In this squad Hodge would be one Id see as taking Hoggs role off him.
Think the player Kasumu is more a replacement for would be O'brien. He gets about the pitch in the same way, likes bursting forward with it into dangerous areas but I suppose similarly to OBrien is often let down by his final pass. He hasnt managed to replace LOB yet but after dropping a level maybe he can now.
