Think a lot of people are a bit too over confident on here. Ask Sunderland fans, or Sheffield united fans or Portsmouth fans how easy it was to come straight back up. Ipswich as well. I'd even take a couple of years of kicking around in League One, and getting things right, if it meant we returned like Ipswich have done. I.e. ready to return to the Championship. They actually spent a bit of money and signed Championship players. Wrexham follow a similar strategy, by signing League One players this season in readiness for their eventual promotion. We haven't had a plan for years beyond signing ex players or knackered players. We need to get a strategy, and a plan, and follow it through. We now have a manager with some pedigree, make sure he stays, and then back him to the hilt. You can't expect him to do anything with the likes of Ben Jackson, Ben Wiles, David Kasumu, Danny Ward, Josh Koroma and all the rest. Clear the decks and give him what he needs. If we go down and get promoted in the next couple of years, we'll enjoy it far more than we've enjoyed anything in years. Couldn’t agree more.

I haven’t seen any L1 this season but I have seen over 30 games in L2, seen every team bar Grimsby, Morecambe and Doncaster so far. Not one team has properly impressed me, including already promoted Stockport and Wrexham. However, it helps massively when you’ve got 20+ goal-scorers, like both those teams have, as do Mansfield who will likely also go up. It wouldn’t surprise me if all three had good seasons in L1 if they keep their strikers.
Could the likes of Healey and Radulovic get 15+ each in L1?
Ironically, the best performance was by Sutton United v Notts County on the opening day, and now SU are doomed.
You don’t need quality defenders in L1, just solid no-nonsense defenders that don’t fart about passing it about at the back.
It shouldn’t be underestimated how difficult it can be to get rid of a “losing mentality” in a squad. Most in this squad have known nothing other than struggle and for that reason alone I think many in this squad need to move on for their sake as well as for the club, and that includes a few that have been here a long time.

We wouldn’t be that good. We’d be top 6. We need new blood to push us to championship-winning quality, and I actually agree with the points on mentality raised. But some people have played far too much Football Manager. Much of our current squad will be with us in August whether we like it or not. Harness what we have, which is not inconsiderable in the division below, add quality in midfield in particular, in all of 6, 8, and 10 roles, add leadership, and we would be a formidable outfit. That formidable outfit would tear League One apart. 🤦♂️ We have a core outfit that would compete immediately at the top end. We lack ball-players and leaders. Get those, and we'll be favourites for the title if we go down. We're too quick to denigrate what we have. Ben Wiles is a prime example. He's not been great, but he hasn't been awful as some have stated regularly. And in League One, he's a genuinely formidable player. A dozen goals and seven assists from midfield the last time he played in that division (in his second promotion team, so hardly a habitual loser, while also winning the cup formerly known as the Paint Pot), alongside Dan Barlaser. The trick is to take Wiles and find another Barlaser to get the best out of him. Sign one player, get the best out of two. Ditto Pearson. We want proven players in that division if we go down. Well, he's won it as an ever-present. He's limited technically, that we know. So you get someone in front of him who can take the ball and distribute it. Curiously enough, like Dan Barlaser! Not saying we'd get him, he's an established player at Boro these days, but you hopefully see my point. Get the right player in one or two positions, with the right mentality, and you improve the whole team, 1-11. Had we done that more in January, we'd be a long way from where we are. As it is, we brought in a handful of players who do improve us and still have points to prove. League One is difficult. I'm the first person to say that. Don't take it seriously, it sucks you in and keeps you for a spell, regardless of its quality. We have to take it seriously. But we also have to get shot of this defeatist 'in it for a spell' mentality that permeates. This isn't 2001. We will be in a stronger position in a weaker league. We won't be going toe-to-toe with the Norwiches and Southamptons of the world.

I absolutely agree, you can’t separate the on-pitch problems from the appalling mismanagement and lack of ambition and planning off the pitch and in the boardroom. This club needs a massive shakeup and change in mentality from top to bottom. KN has had twelve months to learn about the club. I hope lessons have been learned and he has a plan.

Everything in that is absolutely spot on apart from Thomas will get a move back to the Championship imo. We’re stuck with the majority of this squad, and it isn’t one that will frighten any of the better sides in League 1. Many of our squad will probably still be playing at a level above where they should be. I don't know enough of Div 3 to know who the good teams are but presumably, they will be promoted. What I do know is last year's Div 3 Champions have struggled in the Championship, as have the Wendies, who accumulated over 90pts last season. Ipswich have been excellent though, obviously. Quality wise, I think the bottom 8 or 9 in this year's Championship have been really poor & have been pretty much on a par but they include Plymouth & Wendies who walked Div 3. I expect we will lose Helik, Nakayama, Rudoni, Burgzorg, Thomas & maybe Balker but we need a big clear out to rid of us of the losing mentality of our squad. We will get far more decisions in Div 3 than we have here, we are bound to get several home penalties & none of the opposition are going to be anything like the calibre of Leicester, Leeds & Southampton. The main difference, if we do go down, will be that I'm sure KN will support as, as much as he can, to get back quickly. This, clearly, does not mean I expect us to walk our way to the title, however, I do feel I'd be disappointed if we weren't challenging, as a few wins would restore players' confidence quickly. That being said, I am not willing to accept we will be going down just yet, the players were very good yesterday & were clearly robbed, we deserved, & should have had, 3 pts. Plymouth win at Leicester, Birmingham win at Coventry, and the bindippers let Blackburn win at Elland road, the first time they have lost there all season. Then we get the worst penalty decision against us, in the 9th/10th minute of injury time, which should have been 5 mins....how many more ways can the football gods scream "come in HTAFC your time is up"

We're the added 2 Lee Martin and Martyn Booty ? Haha! Still, if we do go down, we are in a better position than when we went up from Div 3. Some of my most exciting times were in League 1. Nobody doesn't want their club to be as high up as possible, but if it means entertainment and actual excitement, it wouldn't disappoint me too much. Ha! In those days, whenever we lost, Jacko would always trot out the "when I arrived, we only had eight players" but in later years he's changed it to six! Some of my best times were in League Two and One, but so were some of my worst. However, we had some decent players for that level, including some that had stepped down and a lot of decent youngsters who all had the benefit of playing together from a young age. Plus they were local. We don't have any of that now. When we came down in 2003, we didn't keep the bunch of losers that had taken us down, Jacko had to put a new team together. In the event of us going down, Breitenreiter or whoever is the manager, should be allowed to do the same. People talk about Corberan not being backed, yet are sermingky happy about Breitenreiter not being backed (basically saying this team is fine in League One, which is absolute rubbish by the way). I would try and let go any player we can get money for in the summer, whether they are strong for us or not. A full squad revamp is needed. The mention around the club with on field performances must be an all time low conserving the last 2 years. A lot of this squad have been there for that period. Can't be a good place to be around for new players. Healey, bojan etc must be fed negative vibes from the off.

Think a lot of people are a bit too over confident on here. Ask Sunderland fans, or Sheffield united fans or Portsmouth fans how easy it was to come straight back up. However, look at the Rotherhams of the world who find it easy in Lg1. But are apparently worse than us.

I think you, and others, are being seriously kind to the current squad and I also think it's a bit of complacency as well. It happened in 2019, where the general opinion seemed to be that we'd be competing in the Championship with the players they had and they'd be absolutely fine because they'd played in the Premier League. We can't get rid of everyone, but we should try and get rid of as many as possible and let the manager build his own team. The fans bemoan the decision not to back Corberan, yet seem fine to let Breitenreiter have a team full of players he didn't sign as they'll be easily competing at the top of League One. Give him some money to spend and let him build a team capable of getting out of League One and holding their own in the Championship. Nagle has already shown that he'll spend money, so he needs to back this manager to the hilt.

We sack managers every few months, go through coaching staff like they're going out of fashion. In the last two years, we've employed six full-time managers, three caretaker managers, five goalkeeping coaches, five assistant managers, numerous first team coaches, set-piece coaches. There's just no consistency whatsoever. And as well, how much have they all cost? We must have spent millions of pounds on backroom staff and even more on sacking the backroom staff. There's no clear plan and hasn't been for years, under various owners, and as you say, we just make do all the time. There's never any clear direction or a plan that we stick to. Everything just seems like it's done on the hoof.

Most of them will struggle to get league clubs after us, let alone a Championship gig. A full Wagner-esque rebuild is required. If we don't do that, we'll be going nowhere.

Although I’ve become a bit disheartened and perplexed by what I’ve seen and heard from AB in recent weeks, I really do hope he stays on for next season even if it is in L1. The last thing this club needs, in my opinion, is yet another managerial appointment with yet another total change of coaching team. Stability needs to start somewhere and somehow. I’d hope that AB and KN are both realistic and professional enough to understand that this club might have to take one massive step back (relegation to L1) before it can be turned around to have any chance of becoming the club we want it to be. Their track records suggest that both OUGHT to be good men for the job. We shall see.

How we do all depends on the mentality of the club if it happens for me, if Nagle backs his manager and we act like the big club we will be in that league we could bounce straight back, if we don’t and it’s more of the same underdog tripe we’ve had for years we could be there for years.

Even if we go down, no reason to be languishing in the doldrums for 10 years. KN got us into this mess, see how committed he is to putting it right. Barnsley and Rotherham never seem to hang about for long before they come back up.

The club needs to adopt a winning siege mentality, no more feeling sorry for ourselves. I’d love AB to stay regardless but I think if we get relegated that he will be off. I’m told he’s shocked at how poor our players are in ability and attitude, I can’t see him hanging about unless he gets promises about rebuilding next season. Not only do we need a rebuild with the squad, our recruitment policy and approach needed a rebuild too because it’s not been fit for purpose since 2018. One thing that often gets forgotten about in a relegation is the fact that a lot of low wage staff will be made redundant so I’ll be never ever be ok with going down whilst I know that will happen.

But he did show interest and pressed through with the purchase when relegation also looked a very real possibility last season. He was prepared for that eventuality then and you assume he will be now but, thankfully and hopefully, with some harsh lessons learned and experience gained.

Was it awful in 2000’s?….we had some cracking away days and a promotion. I think it was more fun than the dire seasons in recent years….. You're not allowed to say that, it's great fun watching us desperately trying to maintain our Championship status year in year out dontcha know. A damn site better than watching us get walloped by Hartlepool on a Tuesday night or losing at Darlington. You're just remembering the promotion season.

Think a lot of people are a bit too over confident on here. Ask Sunderland fans, or Sheffield united fans or Portsmouth fans how easy it was to come straight back up. All of these clubs, plus Bolton and Charlton, were financial basket cases when they dropped, we are not (assuming KN is true to his word). Plenty on here have a go at the small time mentality of the club - why not go in to next season’s almost certain L1 campaign with a swagger, recruit Championship level players and storm it. The better parallels in L1 are when Southampton, Leeds, Norwich and Leicester tumbled to the 3rd tier.

Outside of the fact it’s a lower league I don’t know what would be the difference even if we were bad. In the championship for the most part we’ve done nothing, been scared of everyone and signed substandard players, played the same group of teams for years and had little success. Don’t want to go down but I don’t know what’s so good about the championship as a town fan.

The mentality has needed changing for years. We lost our terrier spirit and we’ve been perennial losers ever since. I know you mean well and it is indeed a negative, but i dont honestly see many fans thinking about staff possibly losing their jobs, dont mean that to sound bad and uncaring but i do think its a reality, a club gets relegated and thats all that concerns the majority. I think it’s more a reflection of the clubs leadership and how badly those low wage staff have been let down.

History tells me that if we go down which seems more likely than not it is far from easy to get back to 2nd tier. I'm old enough to remember72/73 when we dropped to 3rd for 1st timecin our history and it took us to 82/83 to return via what seemed like a lifetime in 4th. In 87/88 we took till 94/95 and no coincidence that in both these instances we had dynamic strong minded managers in Buxton and Warnock. The most recent occurrence 00/01 it again took us until 11/12 so I am realistic enough /hardened enough by a lifetime of following Town since 1967 to believe ( and I hope I'm wrong) that we won't bounce back immediately unless Nagle hires a manager who knows the English game and/or throws a fortune at it as unfortunately nowadays its money money money unless you get a real diamond of a manager
