Barracuda in Ossett (near the top of Storrs Hill Road up from Horbury Bridge) is also good if you're out that way- again, no sitting in though. To be honest sitting in for fish & chips feels "wrong" to me, and I suspect I'm not alone hence the lack of places (sorry, plaices ) where you can. Fish & chips should be served wrapped in paper, and eaten either in the car or at home having driven like Colin McRae to get back before it goes cold. Colin McRae. What a racer! I’ve got a signed Impreza photo with Colin.

Trinity fisheries or trinitees (whatever it's called now) has a small number of seats and I've always found there quantity of good value. They also do a free small fish with any meal you buy. It;s at the bottom end of the park on trinity street. Don't expect great surroundings though but that's same for anywhere in Huddersfield these days!

Bloody hell is the Mermaid still there? Not been to Morley for yonks, but my gran used to work in there, must be 30+ years ago, best F&C ever when she worked there, especially with her employee discount Yes it's still there but whenever I have gone to Asda there is hardly anyone in there and is quite overpriced (not that it would bother are Kev). Hillycroft in Morley is good quality but no seating area. If we are going local indian then Prashad is top quality, and Tharavadu and Dastaan in Leeds are really good as well. Wouldn't trust a local indian around the Morley area, but if anyone wants a proper curry then Bradford is the place The downside is you have to go to Bradford. I agree hillicroft is nice, And I will be getting used to eating there as we are building right next door to it in September on the banking

Fish and chips, the frying pan in the beast market takes me back, wonderful memories of waiting for the fish and chips being pulled down by a trolley on ropes. Fish and chips that will never be beaten, especially on the way home after a load of booze at Johnny's. Growing up, used to have 5 a-side footy birthday party at Sport Centre followed by fish and chips upstairs in Frying Pan. Happy, happy memories.

Mermaid was fantastic back in the day (very early 90s). Last time I went was about 10 years ago and it had become very pricy and the fish had shrunk to half of its previous size, or so it seemed. I used to like the Golden Hind in Brighouse, don't know if it's still there? I agree it's pricier than your average take away chippy, but it's comparable with Murgatroyds which he says he enjoyed, and lets face it, if you're on holiday you want to eat in pleasant surroundings - both are still good value compared with with other City restaurants. As for the OP, as already said, bring a plate & some cutlery until you can train the lad to eat fish & chips proper. PS I'm a Bit's person myself, Does anyone know if Bit's v Scraps has regional connotations? never been able to figure it out myself - always seemed a bit random. Had a chat with the owner of Skippers in Clecky once (another excellent chippy), and he said it's about 50/50, but with no rationale as to why some are Bits and others Scraps. PPS mosher. Lived down South most of my life, and never came across a chippy where either were available Don’t remember as far back as 82-86 when we lived in Wiltshire so I’ll ask my mam, but 90-92 I lived in Chichester near Portsmouth n like you say most chippies didn’t even do bits/scraps but one that we used did scraps, tried telling them it was bits but they wouldn’t change the sign 😂

Cooked in Veg oil so it's a no from me I had a stage of going there for a while, primarily because it shut at 10.00pm and I finished work late. I brought some home one night and my daughter asked what that awful smell was. I’d been in denial about the fish odour for weeks, purely for convenience. I’d put them in the average to poor bracket, personally. The best ones I’ve enjoyed most recently have been Harry Haywards at Linfit, the one by the entrance to Aldi in Slawit and Outlane. It’s difficult to recommend something that relies entirely on personal preference though.

When I worked in the town center I'd often pop in the Frying Pan for a fish buttie for my lunch. On a nice day I'd sit and eat it on a bench in St. Peter's gardens. That was when the biggest danger in there was getting shit on by a pigeon, before the crack addicts took over and started attacking each other with machetes.

I need sometihng that we either drive past and can stop or is walking distance from the ground The Mother Hubbards suggestion is the best so far. Half a mile walk away from where we usually park (opposite the Vulcan) Mother Hubbards are not traditional fish & chips ...used to be but not anymore , you would be disappointed.

So I’ll be there for a while coming over from Austria on the 29th. Fam coming with, my only experience so far is Murgatroyd’s, which we loved. Is there another you’d recommend more? Murgatroyds in absolutely fantastic and struggles to be beaten however West Yorkshire is the very best for traditional fish and chips. Queens drive Ossett is excellent , Kingfisher Durkar and I'm sure there many more but yep Murgatroyds are superb

Remember the bowling green and bar? I swear they moved as you could never find them even though you’d been loads of time.

BTW for a truly delicious serving of quality tradition fish & chips you should try Grumpy Fryer in Middlestown .....excellent .

Yeah, I mentioned both of those earlier in the thread, hadn't realised they were owned by the same bloke though. Makes sense that they are, as they're both great. I did describe the Kingfisher as being in Calder Grove rather than Durkar though- i thought it only became Durkar on the Wakey side of the motorway! Now that you mention it, I do recognise the road name Queens Drive, was just having a brain-fart. Never tried that chippy though, I'll have to give it a try sometime. Been living in Batley ten years now and still haven't found a chippy nearby that holds a torch to the Barracuda. There used to be two in the town centre, both OK but nothing special- one of them has now closed leaving just Howies which as I said is nothing to write home about.
