Whilst it’s true that Whitby locals like Silver Street fisheries for a takeaway, the Magpie is consistently the best restaurant. After saying that, don’t think you’ll have any bad fish and chips anywhere in Whitby. Agreed. We go to the Magpie for other seafood, the baked salmon with samphire is to die for. We get our takeaway from silver street or fish box down by the Endeavour. There’s also a fish box at the top of the hill in RHB and it’s a cracking place after the walk down from Whitby on the cinder track or the cliff edge.

If you're ever driving past The Spinners Fisheries (on the way into Dewsbury from Ossett) then keep on driving and go somewhere else.
Called in tonight at around 8:30pm. They waited until I'd paid (think it was £8.95 for fish and chips!) before telling me that the food was being 'cooked to order' - I'd have left if I'd known - but it would only be a few minutes. About ten minutes later I got the food.
Got home and 'poured' the chips out from the bag of fat/oil. Had to use a plate as the paper was completely soaked through with fat/oil
Took a bite of the fish only to discover a thick bone, around an inch long.
Don't think I'll be using that place again!

Places like Greggs and so forth gets packed all day, you know what you are getting. Fish shops are so hit and miss.

If I'm down by myself I stay at Heath Cottage just by the Spinners Fish and Chips shop and have used them a few times. Been OK every time I have used them.

The problem with cooked to order is usually they don't allow the oil to drain off. So if you have them wrapped the steam and fat turns them to mush. Soggy batter, not nice.

Does cooked to order often mean not good enough to be busy ? I’m guessing it’s more to do with waste these days. Our local chippy always had some fish in the “warming cabinets” but since the costs for everything from energy to the actual fish, fat etc rocketed they always just cook them to order now (even when it’s busy).

Yeah fair enough , don’t eat fish and chips now right often .

Does cooked to order often mean not good enough to be busy ? TBF it was after 8:30pm so I'm not surprised. But normally, when you ask for something that isn't ready, they tell you before taking payment so that you can make a decision on whether or not to wait.
I've called in before at busier times and the food was ok but rather pricey.
These days I use Arnie's in Thornhill Lees. Not always perfect but usually pretty good. They only open at lunch and tea-times though.

Another foible of chippies, the opening hours. They do less hours than footballers…

Does cooked to order often mean not good enough to be busy ? Not always. The one I use has a queueing system to order and pay, then you have to wait outside for your order to be called then go in to collect. To be fair they are good, no fat residue even when taken home. Seems to work. I think they cook in batches then wrap up orders, so not strictly cooked to order, but not like the old days rattling off the orders. Until you got the dreaded "waiting for more fish/chips" as the case may be!

I used to use a chippy where the fish were individually priced depending on size.
