The two main worries for me:
1 - we went all out to sign a proven goalscorer at this level in Alfie May, pulled out after it being hijacked which was fair enough, but haven't brought in an equivalent. Marshall looks ok, but not proven and still think he's behind Healey and Koroma in the pecking order, whereas May would've been starting every game.
2 - we're shoehorning players into the 3-5-2 system. We've just about got away with it so far but it's not sustainable making 2 or 3 big errors in defence per game. We've gotten away with it against Stevenage and Shrewsbury but the better sides will punish us.
On the other hand, I think we might have a season where we're better against the better teams. Duff is an out of possession manager, as are the majority of our players. I think we saw it against Peterborough that we were so much more comfortable in and out of possession. So the best may be yet to come and in the meantime we're still picking up wins. UTT!

Alfie May has scored in all 3 league games so far this season...earning Birmingham 5 points... and it's not all about splashing the cash as they've brought in on loan . Ben Davies from Rangers Alfons Sampsted from FC Twente Taylor Gardener-Hickman from Bristol City Luke Harris from Fulham as well as 10 new signings... That's showing 'intention' ....
Signing Lyndon Dykes from qpr now apparently for 1million Us or Brum? Hopefully the latter because I don't rate him at all.

Conversely... We narrowly beat the worst team in the division, were unconvincing against another team that was widely tipped to struggle and were fortunate to catch Peterborough on an off day. Oh, and we knocked the worst team in the EFL out of the cup. Meanwhile, if Reading play like they did against Brum in every game this season they'll get automatic promotion at a canter. I'm happy with our start and you can only beat what's in front of you, but Brum are only 2 points behind us and we are yet to play against anyone that's actually good. We're contenders, but we ain't the favourites for good reason. Our next 6 league away games should define where we are actually at.

Sometimes I feel like Kev Nagle is his own worst enemy. A lovely bloke, well-intentioned, and is doing so much good for this club, however it was he that set the expectations of the fans with talk of promotion being the aim AND it was he that said we wanted to bring in two strikers.
How we haven't managed to do that (bring in the strikers) when we are in a transfer surplus is baffling to be honest. Perhaps it's better to say nothing rather than raise expectations and not deliver.
Yes it's been a great start but the problems are obvious and we are yet to play a decent side. I'm not convinced we have the strength in depth to keep it up. I hate to be pessimistic but I feel it's realistic.

3 games where we have been the better side and had the rub of the green, but the issues are there for all to see. Let's not get carried away thinking we are set for an automatic promotion spot just yet. Rub of the green??? How much possession have we had in each of those games? How many shots and shots on target compared to the opposition have we had in those games? Yes Lee Nicholls has had to make saves in each game, but that's his job, that's what he trains all week to do and is the the team to do. And that's what opposition keepers have done for their teams in each game. People say without Nicholls we lose the Shewsbury game and yes he made 2 or 3 saves (and they hit the bar), but non of them were as good as the 2 or 3 saves that their keeper had to make. He made a great reaction save to deny Marshall with a header early on, fractionally slower reflex's and that's a goal. He made a great reaction save in the second half at the near post to deny Marshall from Wards cross. Again, fractionally slower reactions and that's a goal. His save in his 1 on 1 against Healy was excellent. As Town fans we will highlight Healy missing it. However, the keeper did brilliantly, came out, stayed big, then saved it really well with his leg. If he doesn't come out of quick and goes down sooner, Healy scores. Also he did well earlier with Healy's chance from Koroma's reverse pass. closed down really well, stayed big and made it really hard for Healy to hit the corner of the goal, forcing him to shoot wide. We've not particulary had the rub of the green. The opposition have missed a few chances and Nicholls has made some good saves. But in every match, we've missed more chances and the opposition has had to make more good saves than Nicholls. So if we'd have had the rub of the green, we'd have scored 4 or 5 in every game and being out of sight in each on by half time. But yeah, we with 3 wins from 3, 5 goals scored and only 1 conceded from a penalty and currently sitting in 2nd, we don't look capable of potentially getting an automatic spot. Compared to last year we have had the rub of the green. Look at the performances and who we have played and we are far from looking like an automatic promotion contender.

Might be a bit harsh on Healey? Not on what I've seen so far. Niggly fucker which I like and decent at the hard yards and holding it up if its to feet/linking play but not going to get 15/20 goals or anywhere near IMO. And thats the problem, none of them are. No comment on Radulovic as I've seen him play for about 100 minutes in 6 months which is its own story but everyone else is some variation of a "second striker". None of them are going to be the go to goalscorer. You can have a striker like Ward (of 3 years ago) or Healey who contribute a smallish amount of goals but work hard and hold it up if you're playing a 1 up front system, because then the wide men and/or a number 10 are expected to contribute good numbers as well, having been brought into play by the striker. We've been to 2 Championship play off finals with our central striker in a 1 up top system scoring about 10 goals. In a 2 up top system the major source of goals has to be at least 1 of the strikers imo.

Might be a bit harsh on Healey? Healey brought in to get us out of trouble last season and did nothing, I can't say I expect anything much better this time around. Just an example of Cartwrights insight in to a quality striker and what we can expect from this window after last January's window.

It's those bold statements that aren't backed up that I find bizarre I realise a lot of fans like it, I think there are ways of being open (the video diaries etc) that don't expose him on such a toxic platform. There is a reason you don't see many of his peers across the EFL acting in a similar way. Well apart from that plumb at Peterborough. Agree on the bold statements though, surprised they haven't learned from the whole 'position of strength'. We are also non the wiser on stadium ownership despite statements alluding to it being close to completion months ago. This isn't to say he's spinning a yarn, but like you say is statements like this that set expectations.

The problem with this league is that when you get stuck in it, you often end up spending a long time trying to get out. We found that out before, and it took us finding a 20 plus goal a season striker in Rhodes. That was the difference in the end and we don’t have one in my opinion. Often the best time to get promoted following relegation is at the first attempt and to do this I still think we are 2 or 3 short.
I just still get the sense we are trying to do ‘just enough’ like last year. It’s a different situation but we tried to do just enough because Warnock pulled off a ridiculous escape the season before. It felt like the club thought cus we had Warnock we wouldn’t need to invest. Then it came to the jan transfer window and it was panic stations overpaying for players who made no difference.
It’s frustrating because I’m enjoying the winning feeling again and it’s just the start we need to give fans hope again after some abysmal post premier league years. There is just the nagging fear we are doing just enough again in the clubs eyes, and because we have beaten 3 teams out of 3 in the league, we will keep winning. I would love to see us get those quality additions but I would be amazed if we got anyone now.

All of which I think will be punished against better teams.

We've just comfortably beaten them 2-0 Stevenage are currently 11th having won and drawn their other 2 games...they finished 9th last season just 5 points outside the play-offs. We've just beaten them 2-1, with them scoring a last minute penalty. Granted it was a poor second half, but we could have been 3-0 and out of sight at half time.... The 3 clubs that Brum have played so far this season and drawn and had 2 narrow wins against, finished below those 2 teams last season. They haven't played anyone of note as yet and haven't particular blow them away. Stockport are on a of positivity after going up last season, as are Wrexham and Crawley. Will they all continue their good start for a full season? Charlton finished 16th last season, will they continue their good form for a full season? Lincoln finished 7th, currently 2 wins from 3. We are 3 from 3. Bolton have won one, lost one, drawn one. We all know the season after loosing the play off final can be tough. Barnsley have won 1, lost one drawn 1. We've won 3 from 3. Blackpool are currently 3rd bottom with 1 point. Wycombe who finished 10th last season are currently 16th with just 1 win and 2 losses. Leyton Orient finished 11th and are currently 2nd bottom with 0 points. Northampton who are currently 5 points behind us in 10th and finished 14th last season. Stevenage are 11th and if they finish above us, we might as well just pack in. Reading are 12th with 1 win, and finished 17th last season..... We've not as yet played well for a full 90 minutes in any of our matches yet. Essentially the players are still learning Duff's style of play. We will get better. We've won 3 out of 3, scoring 5 and conceding just 1. But yeah, we are far from looking like an automatic promotion contender Can I just ask you and others, who are the ones that on current form and results look better prospects for Automatic promotion than us and why?

From what I've seen so far we really struggle to break down teams who defend deep (is it called a deep block now then?) and don't seem to have someone with the intricate passing to unlock that kind of defence. Whereas the better teams won't (or shouldn't) defend as deep leaving more opportunities to unlock the defence. Hope you're wrong and I'm right and we'll certainly find out with the next run of games, there's some serious opponents coming up. If we're still in the same kind of position at the end of October I'll be more than happy. It feels weird being THIS optimistic after the majority of post-PL though.

We don't play like a team full of confidence who can pass the ball around and score at will. Maybe given more time Duff will get us nearer that, but we are still no more than average without a true striker in the squad and we have gaps in other areas as well. I am not getting carried away just because the results look much better than the way we have played todate. As for other teams I don't watch them with the same intensity as I do Town, but others have provided a number of names.

So basically you say we are not Automatic promotion candidates, but then from the other 23 league 1 teams, you can't name 2 that will finish above us and why......OK
Whilst I agree we could do with a couple of additions to the first 11 - Striker & left footed Centre Back - we've won 3 of 3 without getting anywhere near top form for a full 90 minutes and currently sit in an automatic promotion spot.
For me, that actually bodes well.

Yes. If you want a proven goalscorer, be prepared to pay the going rate. I'd rather have Alfie May on stupid money scoring a load of goals, than Danny Ward/Kian Harratt/Rhys Healey/Bojan Radulovic getting eight between them. So you would have wanted us to pay 20k a week with a 500k relocation fee for someone who will be 34 at the end of his contract? Given that if he fired us to promotion his wage would be a factor in what we could then spend in the championship? Also matched with other players who are on less than half the 20k May would have got? How would you control that? Don’t quite get how someone like May is labelled as such a big risk with no value, yet an injury prone Healey at well over a million, approaching 30 and injury prone was heralded as an absolutely superb signing. If we don’t get a goal scorer in with a decent fitness record we will have missed a trick. No faith in Healy to stay fit, Marshall looks good but raw. The least said about the rest the better, Koroma is a winger who is ok in fits and starts. Ward, Harratt and Hudlin are absolutely pathetic.

Is the squad better now than it was at the start of the window. Simple question, really. The answer? yes. A simple question but not the right one.

Prime example on Saturday, Healey had a chance that he should be burying. I think a proper goalscorer would have done. Think healey is a proper goalscorer, unfortunately for us he can’t seem to stay fit Ah but he missed one chance so he isn’t a proper goal scorer.

The one he put wide after being fed in to the area by Koroma was a chance he should’ve been taking, and the one on one even more so. I’m not down on him and I think he should score a good amount of goals at a level which is beneath his ability but not his injury record.
