Aye a guy who got a team predicted to be relegated promoted to the top flight for the 1st time in 45 years, and who "might win the Bundesliga" is worse than, or at best equal manager to, Mick Buxton. Wagner did fantastically well for us in his first two seasons but never underestimate the achievments of Mick Buxton, the second longest serving manager in our history, who tooks us from the foot of the fourth divison to the second divison (now Championship). Both were great managers who I would hold in equal esteem. If Wagner won the Bundesliga it wouldn't even be close.

He singlehandedly took a team that was heading out of the football league and dragged it up the divisions with very little money. Remember the immediate impact he had years later when he was called on to help Ian Ross? In comparison, David Wagner had a fortune to spend, with the backing of a multi-millionaire.

I think time has maybe made the heart grow fonder. In financially comparative terms I would say Wagner was at more of a disadvantage to his peers than what Buxton was. Wagner got a side that was fancied to be relegated into the Premier League. Buxton had an unfancied and financially comparable side in the same tier teetering and struggling to stay in the same division and was (probably harshly) sacked because he wasn't going to achieve that. Buxton did a wonderful job and injected pride and honour back into the shirt, he made players better and will go down as one of the best. Same with Ian Greaves who also did an amazing job. But neither are as good as the job DW did in those 2 years IMO. DW has gone on and got a top European job on the back of what he did here, Buxton despite the job he did went to Scunthorpe and then had a crack at Sunderland in tier 2 where again he found himself in the relegation zone.

But surely the comparison should be between Buxton and the managers & budgets he was up against versus Wagner and the managers & budgets he was up against. Saying Buxton had nothing versus Wagners’ millions completely misses the point. Wagner had one of the lowest budgets in the league, was up against teams with a wage bill several times higher (villa would’ve been about 7x and Newcastle 9x higher) and took a team from 17th to promoted. I’m too young for Buxton’s era so can’t comment,

You have no idea pal. OTI could win the Bundeliga....and the Premier league....i would even assert that with the right team behind you and financial backing you would. Now are you a great manager? Buxton never got the chance....nor did my Granny. Wagner fans will be so disappointed if he gets relegated next season...a likely scenario. No you couldn't. No I couldn't. BELIEVE. I could fly the space shuttle if you showed me how. Do you know the Ranieri story...28 years a manager before he won a national league title....then he does it a 5000/1...then he is sacked the next season when they looked in danger of relegation? Its random out there.

How good a manager is depends on whether the team performs better than players he has (or buys) should do based on their ability.
It's a bit subjective, but I'd say Wagner, Buxton, Warnock and possibly Jackson have all done that since my first game under Greaves in the 1st Division.
Wagner probably did it for longer and if he had left before November would be head and shoulders above the others. However the last 6 weeks of his time here casts a large shadow over the previous 2 seasons. In time that shadow will lift and he will be remembered as probably the best manager we've had since the glory years.

All the best to him. It would have been shite to see him rock up at some middling Premier League team next season.

Good luck indeed, he's going to need it. He's been clever enough to negotiate a 3 year contract. Hanging on for 3 years at Schalke 04 is easier said than done, last achieved by Huub Stevens in 1996-2002, who is coincidentally the guy who's leaving again in summer after his 3rd spell at the club. Since 2002 they've had about 20 other fellas taking over the role and being shown the door. A 3 year contract should however have a nice pay-off included if he goes early. The betting starts here.....

Good luck Mr Wagner.
I hope you can have as big an impact on Schalke as you did on Huddersfield.

Would of been hard to take if he joined an English club. Genuinely wish him the very best. I’ll never forget what the bloke did for us.

Seems to like players hes worked with.... could offload a few to Schalke Schindler nailed on imo. Depends on what ambitions Wagner has for Schalke. Schindler has been good for us but he's a lower half PL centre half and wouldn't get anywhere near a starting place in most teams in the top half. Assuming the Bundesliga is of a simialr standard to the PL then I would think Wagner will be setting his sights a little higher than Schindler.

I think most Schalke fans expect S04 to be pushing for Europe really. So just look at Hinteregger (for Frankfurt tonight) - similar mould to Schindler (apart from the penaly he took), DW may well want to steal Schindler from us.

3/4 of million views on the subject of who is going to be Schalke's new chief coach on Schalker Block 5 (= DATM equivalent) - and there has been one reply in 5 hrs since the official announcement. Weird!!
Edit: Talk about being dumbfounded!

Except that it isn’t a similar standard than the premier league. There hiding by City certainly suggested so. Schindler would likely improve Schalke imo.

I'm sure he would not try to lure a player we wanted to keep. Actually, i don't think he will take any of our players, i think he would want a fresh start.

Or he might look at some of our Quote Danish disgraces ? I doubt he would now, he will have heard they have downed tools at a club he still has a great affinity for. The only reason he would do it would be football manager style. Take over a club buy all the shit from another club for excessive cash and then return to town with a huge warchest.... wishful thinking I suppose.
