I went to Southport, Haig Avenue, for a Div.4 league game towards the end of 1978, we drew in front of less than 1,500 fans, over half were in the away end - it wasn’t a great time to be a Town fan, mind you even worse for Southport, it was their 50th year as a FL club but despite finishing above Rochdale they failed to win re-election, the last team to do so.
For those old fogies, like me that still remember, Town had John Haselden as manager, Nottingham Forest won the league title, the season after getting promoted, Wimbledon had just joined the FL, Spurs got promoted and Man U set a new transfer record to buy Gordon McQueen

I went to that 1978 game at Southport, marauding Town fans looking for someone to fight with and they couldn't find anyone. I remember it being a tidy little ground.

For those old fogies, like me that still remember, Town had John Haselden as manager, Nottingham Forest won the league title, the season after getting promoted, Wimbledon had just joined the FL, Spurs got promoted and Man U set a new transfer record to buy Gordon McQueen That was our last league game (attendance 1,465) of only 8 ever against Southport as they failed to be re-elected and were replaced by Wigan. I went to the first, away, in December 1973, our first season outside the top two divisions, Division 3, 0-0, attendance 2,109. They were relegated that season and we followed them the season after, so I was able to be part of a bumper holiday crowd at Haig Avenue on 27 December 1975, 2,546, and see us win 2-1. We had beaten Tranmere at home on Boxing Day and if we'd won both the return fixtures at Easter 1976, we'd have been promoted. Mr Willis fucked us at Tranmere but we really had to haggle to lose 2-1 at home to Southport on Easter Monday.

is anyone staying the weekend? Its a couple of days before the next set of restrictions are lifted although it wont stop anyone from going for the weekend if they want to, they`ll just have to put up with rules and regulations in pubs etc.

Don't forget Argentina winning the world Cup, Barron Knights ruling the charts and me starting at high school Of course in addition to you starting school a few more less important events occurred, Indiria Ghandi was expelled from India’s parliament, smallpox was eradicated (COVID-19 are you paying attention at the back there ?) the first invitro birth, Grease was the word, Deer Hunter the academy award winner, Mark & Mindy the big tv show along with Dallas and the Hulk, Garfield the cat cartoons appeared (I remember them being in the Examiner), Kenny Rogers told you when to fold em while the Pistols went on tour in the US but I’d didn’t end well, especially for Sid and Nancy. A gallon (not litre) of petrol was 76p, a pint was 40p and the average house £16,000, which you could afford with your average £84 pw wage as a manual worker and lastly it was the winter of discontent, strikes, power cuts, inflation, litter piled in the streets, bodies left in the morgue and more than anything else it all lead to the arrival of Maggie Thatcher to cure the sick man of Europe. There’s a cue to take the thread of at a tangent.

Good detail Mecha except your spell checker didn't like Mork. ....and I see we were the "winner" of discontent. Aye, no one could do discontent like the UK in the 70's My eldest daughter born on Halloween, 31/10/1978.

I tried to book 2 seats this morning , as the Southport website was showing a few seated spaces vacant , but it would not allow as it said it was close to selling out. so had to go for the Standing terrace, ( same price £12 ) also got 2 nights b and b . Friday to Sunday. where are people going for a beer ?, besides the Weatherspoon's near the pier. looks like a good 30 minutes walk to the ground.

Some good pubs in Southport , looking forward to a good Saturday night out.

Bought. Anyone know any good boozers in Southport? Weatherspoon's is near the pier, The Sir Henry Segrave 93-97 Lord St, you could start in there and ask the locals, 1.7 mile walk from there to the ground. not many near the ground. Thatch and Thistle a couples of streets past the Ground.

Tap and bottle, by the station is ok. Another pub next door is The Hungry Monk, never been in though.
On Lord Street there is The Peaky Blinder Bar and just up from there is the Bottle Room, by the roundabout.
Not been for 18 months and was pretty disappointed generally in the area, from what it used to be years ago.
A couple of Spoons variants in and around, but I can’t comment on them
Even Shit Helen’s is better, and that says a lot….
